Municipal office filing period begins Monday

Candidates interested in filing for municipal office in El Reno can file beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28. The filing period closes at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, said Allen Arnold, secretary of the Canadian County Election Board.

Arnold said anyone wishing to contest a candidacy must have it to the election board no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1. Contesting a candidacy may only be filed by another candidate for that office, unless a candidate files unopposed.

Ice Cream Freeze-Off Saturday

I scream. You scream. We all scream for ice cream – at the first-ever Ice Cream Freeze-Off held in conjunction with the 69th Annual Canadian County Free Fair. An event for all ages, participants can milk their favorite homemade ice cream recipes for top bragging rights at 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, Aug. 26, by the Canadian County Expo Center Stage, 3001 Jensen Road East.

The sponsor for the event is Canadian County District 2 Fair Board member Ken Carpenter.

Sacred Heart School earns A+ Distinction

El Reno’s Sacred Heart Catholic School was named an Oklahoma A+ Schools of Distinction last week.

Oklahoma A+ Schools Institute (OKA+) at the University of Central Oklahoma advances its mission of helping schools to think, plan and behave more creatively.

Sacred Heart Catholic School joins the network of close to 60 schools representing early childhood education through high school in urban, suburban and rural Oklahoma communities.

Gala to support victims of human trafficking

The Dragonfly Home will host its Eighth Annual Crown of Beauty Gala in support of its services for victims of human trafficking on Thursday, Sept. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Embassy Suites in downtown Oklahoma City.   

“Oklahomans are realizing more and more that human trafficking is very real and it’s happening here, and they want to make a difference,” said Whitney Anderson, executive director of The Dragonfly Home.
