Tribune wins statewide honors

The El Reno Tribune won the Sequoyah Award at the recent Oklahoma Press Association conference. The event was held at the Embassy Suites in Norman. 

The Sequoyah Award is given to the newspaper competing in its category and signifies it was judged the best newspaper in its classification.

Judges for this year’s competition were from the Georgia Press Association. 

The El Reno Tribune competed in the multi-weekly division representing towns ranging in population from 20,000 to 40,000.

McVay gracious in loss, says he will support GOP candidate

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Democrats have chosen Jennettie Marshall as their nominee for the state’s top education office.

Marshall, a former Tulsa Board of Education member, defeated former El Reno Public Schools Superintendent Craig McVay in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election for state superintendent, winning 58 percent to 42 percent. She will advance to the Nov. 3 General Election and face the winner of an Aug. 25 runoff election between Republicans Robert Franklin and James Taylor.

Manske, Kelley keep respective seats; Winegeart, Koch in runoff

In elections of local interest, District 1 County Commissioner Tom Manske will retain his seat after defeating former Commissioner Marc Hader.

Manske picked up 4,054 votes compared to 2,361 for Hader. 

Manske said he was grateful for the support. 

“Thank you, Canadian County District 1,” Manske said. “On behalf of my family and myself, thank you to the voters of Canadian County District 1 for your trust, confidence and support.

Art in the Park returns with summertime fun

Art in the Park is back for another summer run, giving young El Reno artists the chance to create and learn about art in a colorful setting. 

Hosted by the El Reno Arts Council, the free activities have been hosting young artists since April when the first event was held at Burton Park.

The program took a break in May, then returned June 13 with a gathering at Gadberry Park.

Proud Centenarian

Body

Centenarians of Oklahoma was proud to honor El Reno resident Mildred “Millie” Sullens on the occasion of her 100th birthday celebration and induct her into the Centenarians of Oklahoma Hall of Fame.

Millie has lived a life filled with faith, service, adventure and determination.

She is a retired Oklahoma Natural Gas employee, devoted church member, volunteer, world traveler and water-skiing enthusiast.

She continues to inspire everyone around her.

Lamplighters discuss plans for county fair

Lamplighters OHCE met recently at Mount Zion Global Methodist Church, with Carol Stine calling the meeting to order.

Donna Wehmuller read a devotional titled “Shifting Sands.” She presented every member with a sea shell inscribed with Matthew 7:26.

Maxine Little read minutes from the previous meeting, while Patricia Morrison gave the treasury report.

Stine reported on the executive meeting she had attended. Awards from last year were given to Ann Neimann, Wehmuller and Little for having perfect attendance.

Duncan hosts June meeting

Vicki Duncan served as hostess for the June meeting of Oklahoma Home and Community Education’s Underwood Club.

Others attending were Natalia Valenzuela, Bernita Davis, Janan Fletcher, Delpha Miklautsch and Ann Ricketts.

Roll call was answered with “What kind of detergent do you use to clean your clothes?”   

Davis read last month’s minutes, with Fletcher giving the treasurer’s report.

The group voted to send a donation to the 4-H Awards.

Baseball camp

Body

Chase Johnson held his first Youth Baseball Skills Camp as El Reno High School’s head coach.

Johnson said the camp drew more than 40 budding baseball players each of the three days of camp at the Hub Reed Complex.

The camp taught basics in hitting, bunting, throwing, catching and daily contests.
