Union City sweeps Verden to kick off basketball seasons

Both Union City High School basketball teams jumped into the win column to start the 2025-26 season, defeating Verden on the road.

The boys posted a 67-63 win after outscoring Verden 20-12 in the third period to erase a one-point halftime deficit, 32-31. The eight-point spread was key as VHS tried to rally behind a 19-16 break in the fourth.

Redlands women drop close game to Neosho

A see-saw battle ended on a sour note as Redlands Community College women’s basketball team dropped its season opener to Kansas-based Neosho County 75-71.

Redlands trailed 16-15 after one period and it remained a one-possession game until late in the second period. The Panthers hit several 3-pointers to cap a 16-12 run and took a 32-27 lead into halftime.

The Cougars battled back in the third period with a 26-24 edge to close the gap to 56-53, but Neosho County outscored RCC 19-18 over the final 10 minutes.

Scouts to collect food Saturday

El Reno Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will be taking part in the annual Scouting for Food collection effort. 

Beth Griesel is coordinating the effort. Residents are asked to place plastic bags filled with non-perishable food items near the mailbox or curb prior to 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts will be working with adults to collect the bags. Griesel said if a bag has not been collected by noon on Saturday, she can be reached either by calling or texting 405-590-3516 and arrangements will be made to collect the bag.

Cougars log first win of new season

After dropping the season opener to Texas-based Dallas College North Lake, Redlands Community College men’s basketball team earned its first victory of the 2025-26 campaign.

The Cougars rallied from an early deficit to defeat Southwestern Christian University’s junior varsity team 110-83. The win came two days after falling 92-85 to the Blazers.

In the win, Redlands led 50-42 at the break before outscoring the Eagles 60-41 in the second half.

Five players scored in double digits, led by Damond Matthews with 24 points off 9-of-17 shooting.

Wake service for Zayla Rose Lobaugh will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, with funeral services set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, both at the Emergency Response Center in Concho.

Burial will be in the Concho Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Zayla died Nov. 2, 2025, at OU Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was born March 29, 2025, in Ada.

The El Reno Main Street board of directors has voted unanimously to begin a comprehensive rebranding and restructuring process in 2026. This next chapter will focus on listening, learning and rebuilding, ensuring that the organization reflects the needs, values and goals of the El Reno community.
