Graveside services for Dorothy Janet Slover of Minco will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 at the Evergreen Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Huber-Reynolds Funeral Home.

Dorothy passed away Nov. 11, 2023, at her home. She was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Oklahoma City. She was raised in the Tuttle community, graduating from Tuttle High School in 1950.

She moved to Minco in 1964.

She was a homemaker and had worked as a clerk at Woodworth’s Hardware Store.

She was a member of Minco United Methodist Church.

El Reno High School held its annual Veterans Day assembly titled “Never Forget and Honor,” with 20 current or former soldiers from different branches of military service in attendance.

The national anthem was sung by the EHS Vocal Choir, while presenters Hattie Eaton and Radley Slimp welcomed guests and presented a history of Veterans Day.

El Reno FFA officers Rylan Fleenor, Aubrey Rakestraw, Sophie Kamm, Josie Felton, Sam Curtis and Casimir Baeriswyl took turns reciting different parts of the poem “So God Made a Soldier.”

Wesley UMC rolls out new Bookmobile

Wesley United Methodist Church debuted its new Bookmobile at the Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

The dinner, which provided more than 800 meals to residents, was held Nov. 4 at the Canadian County Extension Center at the old fairgrounds.

Amy Neathery said all children attending the dinner were permitted to climb into the Bookmobile and pick out a free children’s book. Kids took home approximately 85 books.

Kindergartner Brooks Bengs, an El Reno Public Schools student, was one of the first kids to step into the new Bookmobile.

Silent donor to match Gold Star Plaza funds

The effort to raise funds to expand the Gold Star Plaza at Memorial Stadium has gotten off to a fast start after an anonymous donor pledged to match contributions up to $35,000 from now until Dec. 15.

El Reno High School English teacher and school historian Brian Rukes said the donor approached him with the “amazing offer” after Rukes made public the plans to add to the plaza that honors those from El Reno who gave their lives in service to the United States while serving in wars spanning from World War I through Vietnam.

El Reno man killed in I-40 accident

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported an 88-year-old El Reno man was killed last week in an accident on I-40, just east of Radio Road.

OHP reports said a 1998 Ford F-150 driven by George Miller left the eastbound lanes of I-40 for an unknown reason. The vehicle struck a fence and came to rest in a ditch.

Miller was taken by Pafford Ambulance to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, but was pronounced deceased there.

OML welcomes newest class

The Oklahoma Municipal League welcomed the newest class of Community Leadership Development (CLD) at the kickoff event in Enid.

An El Reno official is part of the class.

CLD Class 11 consists of elected leaders and municipal professionals from across the state of Oklahoma. CLD is a year-long training program that provides educational opportunities for municipal leaders and is directed at issues that municipalities face on a daily basis.

Early calls put Indians behind eight ball

MIDWEST CITY - Two momentum-turning calls, both going in favor of Carl Albert, put El Reno High School’s football team behind the proverbial eight ball in its seventh straight trip to the postseason.

Both calls would lead to 14 points for the top-ranked Titans and were part of a run of 42 unanswered points as Carl Albert defeated El Reno 49-21 in the bi-district round of the Class 5A playoffs.

The loss snaps a two-game win streak for El Reno and ends its season with a 6-5 record.

James Elder Sr.

Services for James Alan Elder Sr. will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Benson Memorial Chapel with Curtis Steffler officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

James died Nov. 8, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born Oct. 17, 1960, in El Reno. He was employed by Borel Brick.

James was preceded in death by his father, Danny Tammen; his mother, Jamie Sue (Palmer) Cavins; brothers, John Elder and Jarred Tammen; sister, Marty Elder; and grandparents, Exie Robertson Palmer and Lloyd Palmer.
