Clyde Gene Miller was born June 22, 1941, in El Reno to Homer James and Gladys Doretha (Eaton) Miller. Clyde grew up southwest of Calumet. He graduated from Calumet High School in the Class of 1959 and graduated from Capital Business University in 1961 and attended El Reno College.

Clyde was involved in farming for many years. He worked for Canadian County for 28 1/2 years, serving as Canadian County Court Clerk the last 17 1/2 years, retiring in 1990.

Church to hold BBQ cookoff

Body

Fresh Anointing Church will host a Holy Smokes Barbecue Cook-Off at the church on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. until they run out of food.

The funds raised will go to re-stocking the church’s pantry.

Two teams will be smoking baby back ribs and sides so you can cast your vote for the best ribs - by Team Davis (Pastor Beau) or the Worship Team Leader, CJ Raney.

The winning team will receive two B’s - a Blue Ribbon and Bragging Rights until the next cook-off showdown.

Funeral services for Edward Dennis Metz of El Reno will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4 at First Christian Church. Burial will be in the El Reno Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Ed died July 29, 2023, at El Reno Post-Acute Rehabilitation Home. He was born Oct. 7, 1931, in Tulsa to Edward Sr. and Cleo Metz.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Jyene Metz; his parents; his son, Edward; and sister and brother-in-law, Pearl and John Gates.

Fleenor attends AFR Summit

Body

El Reno student Rylan Fleenor recently attended the 2023 American Farmers & Ranchers (AFR) Youth Leadership Summit. The annual retreat develops leadership skills in junior high and high school students that will prepare them for future educational and professional experiences.

More than 200 students from across Oklahoma participated in one of two AFR Leadership Summit sessions—Teen Summit and Senior Summit. Fleenor attended the 2023 AFR Senior Leadership Summit.

Terry Wooldridge

Terry Dale Wooldridge passed away Friday, July 28, 2023, at his home in Medicine Park.

He was born Feb. 4, 1961, the youngest child of Jimmie Jack and Tawina Wooldridge. He was raised in Minco and graduated from Minco High School in 1979.

Terry was employed in different manufacturing jobs and was a skilled welder and loved to play and coach softball.

Underwood group talks county fair plans

Body

The July meeting of the Underwood Oklahoma Home and Community Education group was held recently in the home of Janan Fletcher.

The flag salute was led by Ann Ricketts. Roll call was answered by telling a favorite pineapple recipe.

Other members present were Vicki Duncan, Delpha Miklautsch, Bernita Davis and Natalia Valenzuela.

Minutes were read by Davis and approved. Fletcher gave the treasurer report and read a thank you note from the Canadian County 4-H Club for a recent contribution for their awards banquet.

Nadine Taylor Archer

Funeral services for Nadine (Lott) Taylor Archer will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4 at Huber-Benson Funeral Home. Burial will be at the El Reno Cemetery following the service.

Nadine passed away July 29, 2023, at her home. She was born Oct. 9, 1936, in Cougar to Hayden and Lorea Lott. She spent most of her life residing in El Reno.

She went to work for Canadian Valley Clinic in 1962 and eventually bought the business. Her goal was providing the community with the best health care possible.

Little welcomes opener but work remains

With a little over a week of practices and a handful of preseason outings, El Reno High School’s softball team is set to open the 2023 season at Yukon Monday night.

It’s an opener scheduled quicker than most expected but one that new head coach Jason Little is comfortable with having.

“I think the longer you practice, sometimes it can be regressive and the kids get into the rut of just going through the motions. I want them feeling ready to go.
