Murder trial continued until April 26

The first-degree murder case of an El Reno man charged with stabbing another in September is expected to be taken up this month.

Canadian County Special Judge David Halley on March 21 continued a previously scheduled March 20 preliminary hearing conference to April 26 in the case of Kyler Wayne Barber, 27.

Barber is accused of fatally stabbing 35-year-old Adam Lee Frogge of Oklahoma City in September 2022. He faces a single count of first-degree murder with deliberate intent and is being held without bond in the Canadian County Jail.

Flowers to lead Internet social media safety seminar at Children’s Justice Center

As an investigator with the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office – and particularly as founder of that department’s Internet Crimes Unit – Major Adam Flowers has seen the worst the Internet has to offer.

That’s why Flowers, the sheriff's office and the Gary E. Miller Canadian County Children’s Justice Center will team up to present information to families about the dangers of the Internet, cellphone apps and the people who populate that shadowy world.

Thirty pounds of meth, cash seized in I-40 traffic stop

A deputy with the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle April 3 for a traffic violation along Interstate 40 eastbound near Radio Road.

The stop landed the driver and a passenger in jail.

Reports said the driver was stopped after the deputy observed an improper lane change.

During the stop, lawmen allegedly found some 30 pounds of methamphetamine and approximately $6,500.

EHS girls card low round, team score, take third

Carding both its lowest team and individual rounds since Cameron Wilkins took over the program, El Reno High School’s girls golf team took third place last week in its own invitational.

Playing at Crimson Creek Golf Course, El Reno shot a 397 - the first time under the 400-stroke barrier in two seasons.

Heritage Hall won the 10-team title with a 358, followed by Choctaw at 383.

El Reno was paced by Skylar Ayers who carded a 90 (45/45) for the lowest round by an EHS golfer under Wilkins. She was sixth overall in the individual medalist chase.

Graveside services for Mary Ann Reynolds of Yukon, a former Minco resident, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Evergreen Cemetery in Minco under the direction of Huber-Reynolds Funeral Home.

Mary passed away April 5, 2023, at Dorset Care in Oklahoma City. She was born Feb. 3, 1939, in Wheatley, Ark., and attended Central High School in Oklahoma City.

She worked for Western Electric and Lucent Technologies until her retirement as a part supply coordinator. She was a member of First Christian Church in Tuttle.

Singles, doubles place at Suburban Conference Tennis Championships

El Reno High School’s tennis team took part in the 2023 Suburban Conference Championships recently, with the girls taking sixth place and the boys squad placing seventh.

The girls were paced by Bri Barksdale, who took the consolation title in No.2 singles following a 6-0/6-0 sweep of Del City’s Lanise Robinson. Barksdale went 2-1 with a bye after a first-round loss.

Jayna Graham, playing No.1 singles, took sixth following a 6-4/6-0 loss to Elgin’s Grace Trueblood in the fifth-place match. Ireland Scott and Dalanda Robb placed sixth at No.2 doubles with a 1-2 record.

Lillie Mae (nee Schumacher) Porter was born July 6, 1923, to William F. and Ida (Liebscher) Schumacher, near Okarche, Okla.

She attended Elm Glen Grade School and graduated from El Reno High School in 1941.

She went on to receive her Associate of Arts degree at El Reno Junior College.

Lillie married Russell Finley Porter on Nov. 20, 1954, and moved to Bartlesville that same year.

They had two daughters, Janet and Sharon.

Blanco shuts door on WHS in CA tourney

Body

Hernan Blanco struck out the final batter to earn his first win of the season as El Reno High School’s baseball team defeated Weatherford 4-3 to close out the 2023 Bill Tipton Classic with back-to-back wins.

After losing 11-1 to state-ranked powerhouse Dale and 5-2 to Shawnee, El Reno rebounded with wins over Midwest City (4-1) and the Eagles. The 2-2 record lifted the Indians to 7-15 on the season.
