Tribune, ER Chamber to host Feb. 7 forum for school board candidates

The El Reno Chamber of Commerce will again partner with the El Reno Tribune to host a candidate forum, this time for the upcoming El Reno Public School Board election.

The Chamber and Tribune hosted a candidate forum for the November city council and mayoral race and like the earlier one, the school board forum will be held at Redlands Community College.

The forum is set for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7.

Once again this Christmas season, countless Americans sat down to watch Frank Capra’s Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, starring the great Jimmy Stewart. I’ve seen the movie plenty of times. So why did it leave me crying again this year?

Yet it did, from the moment a desperate George Bailey cried out to his shop-worn guardian angel that he wanted to live again, all the way through “Auld Lang Syne.”

Stirred by that experience and curious as to what prompted it, I decided to do something I had wanted to do for years.

In-person learning is better than virtual-learning.

There are many reasons why this is accurate.

The first reason is that being in-person has more communication between the teacher and student.

Secondly, being in-person makes it easier to pay attention. Lastly, it helps children socialize with their peers. For further insight into this topic, we can explore the reasons and examples why this is true.

In-person learning is better, because you can get a personal connection between the teacher and yourself.

Voters in Canadian County who want absentee ballots mailed to them for the Feb. 14 City of Yukon Council Member at Large, City of Yukon Special Election, Riverside School Special Election, Deer Creek School Primary Board of Education Election, El Reno School Primary Board of Education Election and Mustang School Special Election should apply now, Canadian County Election Board Acting Secretary Allen Arnold said.

ER Wranglers make donations; open rodeo earns IPRA recognition

The El Reno Wranglers recently held their first meeting of 2023, with Jimmy Johnston opening the meeting, followed by the flag salute led by Trisha Duncan and Gary Sorrells offering prayer.

It was reported the Wranglers have donated $500 to the following charities: House of Healing, The Lord’s Harvest, Mobile Meals, Savannah Station and Blessings Baskets.

The El Reno Wranglers Annual Rodeo was rated one of the Top 5 Indoor IPRA Rodeos of the Year.

Members discussed upcoming playdays and parades.

Bezzie Alberta Laughlin

Bezzie Alberta Laughlin left this life to join the Lord on Jan. 7, 2023, at the age of 103. She was the daughter of Norman and Cora Barr Palmer, born Aug. 5, 1919, in the city of Tupelo, Oklahoma. She had two brothers, Carl and Ernest, a sister, Carrie, and a twin sister, Ezzie.

Bezzie grew up in Calumet, where she attended the old Calumet grade school and graduated from Calumet High School in 1938. During her time in high school, she enjoyed being part of the basketball team.

Oklahoma Oil and Gas to host Okarche workshop on Feb. 4

Oklahoma Oil & Natural Gas is sponsoring an energy education workshop on Feb. 4 at Okarche High School.

All teachers are welcome to register to attend for free and leave with up to $1,100 in classroom supplies.

The free workshops coordinated by the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board (OERB) offer training in nine different energy curricula for K-12.

Each curriculum includes hands-on lessons aligned to Oklahoma academic standards and provide real-world applications to concepts that are already being taught in the classroom.

John Lynn Porter passed into his heavenly father’s arms on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, at 84, following a long illness of many factors.

He was born July 30, 1938, to Edwin and Marie Porter in El Reno, Oklahoma.
