Funeral services for Hattie Faye Mauldin will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, at First Baptist Church of El Reno, under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home.

Faye passed from this life on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021, at the age of 90 years young and is no doubt dancing with Jesus. She was born Feb. 12, 1931, in Wilson, Oklahoma.

Faye was preceded in death by her mother, Louie Henderson; sister, Lois Dean Thompson; brothers, Larry Joe Henderson and Orville Whitaker; and daughter-in-law, Laurie Mauldin.

Linda Bannister Simmons

Linda Bannister Simmons journeyed from this life on Oct. 20, 2021, after living a long and textured life. She was born to Rosemary and Ray Bannister of El Reno. Linda passed quietly away in her home with her long-devoted husband by her side and her three children nearby as well.

In 1958, she met the love of her life, James C. “Jim” Simmons of El Reno, and they were wed on Aug. 6, 1960. Linda and Jim had three children, Julie, Susanne and Jim.

Our beloved mother, Joyce Bahran Richey, passed away Oct. 17, 2021.

Joyce was born and spent most of her life in El Reno. She raised her children with love and devotion in El Reno alongside her husband of 51 years, Marvin C. Richey Sr. She was a proud mother to Marvin Jr. and Jason Richey.

Joseph Leo Lagaly

Joseph Leo Lagaly was born Oct. 31, 1930, to Wilhelm and Margaret (Menz) Lagaly at their farm home near Union City.

He was the fifth of eventually nine children. He was named after two uncles, Joseph and Leo, and his grandfather was also named Joseph.

“Papa Joe” passed away peacefully on Oct. 16, 2021, surrounded by much family, including his wife, four sons and several grandchildren.

Joe’s older siblings were George, Barbara, John and Gertrude. His younger siblings were Irene, William, Lawrence and Mary. Joe is survived by George, Gertrude, Lawrence and Mary.

Vonda Sue Boyle

Vonda Sue Boyle, age 65, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021. She was born March 24, 1956, in Okarche to Carl and Ada (Baker) Boyer. She was a graduate of El Reno High School and later attended beauty college. Vonda worked for the Daily Oklahoman newspaper as a route manager for a number of years, and she also had a booth at the AMC Market. She loved to fish with her dad and spend time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Janice Schwab.

Billy Ray Paulk

Funeral services for Billy Ray Paulk were held Friday, Oct. 22 at Wilson Funeral Home, with burial with military honors following at the Red Rock Cemetery in Calumet.

Billy passed away Oct. 15, 2021, at his home in Dibble. He was born Feb. 8, 1932, in Calumet to Luther and Velma Paulk. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1950. After farming for one year, Billy enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and began serving in a career that took him all over the world.

Funeral services for Shirley Lou Oaks of Minco were held Friday at First Baptist Church in Minco, under the direction of Huber-Reynolds Funeral Home.

Shirley passed away Oct. 17, 2021, at her home. She was born April 18, 1937, in Cogar and was raised in the Cogar/Minco area.

She had worked at the Davis Super Café, the Little Giant Pump Company and later for Western Electric until her retirement.

Shirley was a past city council member and coordinated the first Minco October Fest. She was a member of the Rodeo Club and Canaan Baptist Church.

ER Wranglers hold meeting and elections

The El Reno Wranglers recently held their monthly meeting and potluck supper, with Jimmy Johnston welcoming members and Gary Sorrells leading the prayer. There were 26 members present. 

Marie Hirst gave a report from the annual rodeo. It was noted that Corbyn Cooper won first place in the mutton bustin’ contest, with Lila Adams winning the coloring contest.

The quiet game

It’s been said that being a place-kicker in football can be the loneliest job on the field.

Hours spent alone in practice, booting the ball through the uprights from different spots – then chasing down your own footballs.

Game nights are spent walking the sidelines waiting for your number to be called to showcase to coaches and fans what you have been doing in practice.

Not as glamorous as skilled position jobs, but that’s just fine for El Reno High School’s Kenneth Solis – or No.22 on your roster in case you scanned over it.
