Friday, Oct. 9 is the last day to apply for voter registration in order to be eligible to vote in the Nov. 3 General Election, City of Oklahoma City Special Election and City of El Reno Ward 1 Council Member Election, said Canadian County Election Board Secretary Wanda Armold.
Armold said that persons who are U.S. citizens, residents of Oklahoma and at least 18 years old may apply to become registered voters.
Canadian County officials say nothing is more important than the well-being of their employees. Some of those workers could soon get a raise.
At a recent budget meeting, commissioners and other county officers praised employees for how they have handled the COVID-19 situation.
The county workers were applauded for their patience, the extra work they’ve put in over the summer and their willingness to serve the public in the midst of a pandemic.
Memorial services for Gregory Eugene Banks were held Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Fresh Anointing Church with Rev. Chris E. Johnson, Daniel Stalling Sr. and Chris Caldwell officiating.
Mr. Banks died Sept. 23, 2020, at his home in El Reno. He was born June 6, 1961, in El Reno. He graduated from El Reno High School and served in the U.S. Army. He worked in the oil fields and was a member of the Fresh Anointing Church. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, cooking and grilling.
Services for El Reno resident Matthew Ray Ferguson were held Monday at Compassion Church in Oklahoma City with Rev. Steve Ely officiating. Burial followed in the El Reno Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.
Matt died Sept. 29, 2020, at Integris Canadian Valley Hospital in Yukon. He was born Dec. 14, 1973, in Morgan City, La. He was a co-owner of Wilds Green Grass Sod Farm and a member of Passion Church in Bethany. He loved his girls very much and would do anything for them. He was their solid rock.
James H. Smith, age 81, passed from this life in his home on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020. He was born in Dover, Tenn., to Martin Smith and Birdie Wallace. He was the third of four children.
James was preceded in death by his spouse, Brownita Smith; his mother and father; three siblings; and one granddaughter.
Elmo Michael “Mike” Finnigan was born June 26, 1946, to Elmo E. and Agnes Finnigan in Oklahoma City. During his childhood, Mike lived in Concho with his parents and six brothers and sister. He passed away on Oct. 2, 2020, at his home in El Reno.
Mike graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in 1965. After high school, he attended college at El Reno Junior College and OU, was drafted by the United States Army and served at Fort Lewis, Wash., then returned home, worked briefly for the Rock Island Railroad and then opened his machine shop.
LAWTON – Calling it better than last week's blowout of Noble, El Reno High School head football coach Chuck Atchison watched his team put together a fourth-period drive to defeat Lawton McArthur 20-17 at Cameron Stadium.
“This is what happens when we don't turn on each other. This is much more satisfying than a 37-0 win,” said Atchison to his players after the victory over the Highlanders – EHS' second in three seasons.

Horn is retired from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The three were showing support for the United States through an effort called Stand Up for America. Birdsong said it’s a non-political movement and Horn said they stand at different corners during the week along Country Club Road.

A national movement known as Power of 100 has arrived in Canadian County.
Power 100 CC will host its first event the evening of Oct. 12 at the Palace Event Center on Banner Road.
Tresa Smith, who lives between Calumet and Geary, is one of the original organizers of the Power of 100 CC.
For the first time since the Oklahoma Department of Health began using its COVID-19 pandemic map, Canadian County is in the orange category. The state map shows that most of Oklahoma is in the orange, or moderate-risk category.
The map was released last week and is based on the number of people diagnosed with coronavirus during the previous seven days.
