Last weekend I overheard two recent grads (both musicians) discussing America’s greatest composers. The usual names were raised: Copland, Gershwin, Bernstein, Sousa … Foster.

“Who?” said one.

“Stephen Foster,” replied the other.

We must hold China accountable

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its tyrannical government remain a top threat not only to the United States but the entire globe.

Their hostile behavior throughout the past few months has demonstrated their goal of eroding freedom and growing their communist influence. 

The Chinese government lied about the origins of COVID-19 and covered up how bad it really was for months. They are directly responsible for the pandemic which has cost us too many lives, all while completely devastating our economy and livelihoods.

Orby F. Meyer, 83, passed away Friday, July 3, 2020, at CuraHealth Hospital in Oklahoma City, with his family at his side.

Orby was born Nov. 9, 1936, in Madison, Wisc., to Ervin and Ella (Sonnenberg) Meyer. He grew up in Westfield, Wisc. Orby began working in his father’s barber shop in Westfield as an apprentice barber in 1955. He received his Master Barber License in 1959, his Shop Manager License in 1960, and later owned the barber shop from 1961-1974.

Mass of Christian Burial for Frances M. Mosby will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 22 at St. John of Nepomuk Church in Yukon with Revs. Rex Arnold and Robert Strittmatter and Deacon John Teague officiating. Burial will follow in the El Reno Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

El Reno man loses life in stabbing

El Reno police said a 20-year-old man was stabbed to death late Saturday and another man was taken to a hospital in Oklahoma City suffering from stab wounds.

Assistant Police Chief Major Kirk Dickerson said police were called to the emergency room at SSM Health Saint Anthony El Reno just before midnight Saturday.

They found Miguel Jones, 20, of El Reno and another man being treated for stab wounds.

Jones did not survive, while the other man was taken by ambulance to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

No report was provided concerning his condition.

Smith appointed to city council post

Jacquelyn Stevenson Smith will fill out the city council term of former El Reno Vice Mayor J.T. Chronister.

Council approved adding Smith to the Ward 1 position in a 3-1 vote Tuesday evening.

Councilwoman Tracey Rider abstained, which is counted as a no vote.

Smith was nominated by Mayor Matt White and drew the support of Councilmen Tim Robinson and Bob Ballhorn.

Ballhorn was named by the council to serve as vice mayor.

City reminds residents of guidelines for limb removal due to storms

Residents with tree damage from recent storms can get haul-away help from the city of El Reno and Oklahoma Environmental Management Authority but it will require some work.

“OEMA will pick up the tree limbs but you must cut them down,” said El Reno City Manager Matt Sandidige.

According to the OEMA website, under City/Township Guidelines, El Reno residents can place tree limbs/brush at the curbside with trash containers on your normal pickup day.

However, the limbs must adhere to the following guidelines in order to be picked up:

COVID-19 case closes county office to walk-ins

The Canadian County Court Clerk has closed its office to walk-in service, other than by appointment, after an employee tested positive for COVID-19.

Court Clerk Marie Hirst said the office is providing service by telephone, email and standard mail. Also, those seeking marriage licenses can call to make an appointment or do so by email.

Hirst said she consulted with District Judge Paul Hesse and county commissioners before closing the office to walk-in traffic.
