Home runs in the family: Johnson hits grand slam, aunt knocks two out as El Reno splits against 6A foes

A day after watching her niece uncork the biggest hit of her career, El Reno High School junior Shakayla Johnson showed that auntie can also swing the stick with power.

Johnson launched a two-run home run in the first inning and a solo shot in the fifth as El Reno posted a wire-to-wire road win over Putnam City North to move to 1-1 on the season.

Johnson's first two-homer game of her career highlighted her 4-for-4 effort. El Reno as a team went 17-of-37 (.459) from the plate, getting two doubles from Taylor Acosta and one each from Zoey Pawnee, Daisy Hall, Johnson and Brailynn Pawnee.

Acosta, Brailynn Pawnee, Jordyn Littlebird, Hall and Alyssa Duran closed with two hits each. Lily Arnold added a single as did Addilinn Johnson.

Zoey Pawnee moved to 1-1 on the year with a complete-game win over the Panthers. The right-hander had a seven-inning line of seven hits, six runs, four walks and three strikeouts.

While the team's first home run of the regular season was a one-pitch momentum-builder, errors cost El Reno its rally hopes in a 13-5 season-opening home loss to Edmond Santa Fe.

El Reno committed five errors for the game, four of those coming in a six-run fourth inning for the Timberwolves. Two miscues came on the same play in that frame, with two outs, leading to a pair of runs for the 6A school.

El Reno was down 7-0 after one inning following a grand slam and a subsequent solo home run allowed by the EHS pitching staff.

The Indians started a rally in the bottom of the second with singles from Acosta, Hall and Duran. Addilinn Johnson then cleared the paths with a grand slam over the left-field wall.

El Reno added a run in the sixth as Arnold tripled and scored on an error at third. The Indians were 9-of-23 (.391) from the plate with a double from Acosta as part of the senior's 2-for-2 day with a run scored.

Arnold posted two hits, with Shakayla Johnson and Littlebird adding a single each.

Zoey Pawnee took the loss after allowing five runs off five hits in a third of an inning. Acosta pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief with a line of eight runs, seven hits, four walks and a strikeout.
