Calumet SB caps season with D8 title

Calumet High School’s fast-pitch softball team wrapped up the season last week with back-to-back losses in the Class B, Region 1 Championship but still exited the postseason with a winning record.

The Chieftains went 3-2 in the playoffs after winning the District 8 Championship with a win over Timberlake (11-1) and two victories over Drummond by scores of 9-5 and 13-10.

The regional losses were to No.11 Arnett (12-2) and Chattanooga (4-0), which left Calumet with a 12-16 overall record.

Calumet’s offense posted 48 hits in the playoffs, leading to 35 total runs. Autumn Barstow was the top hitter with 10 hits over the five games, including two doubles and a triple. Abby Nitzel was close behind with three doubles and nine hits total.

Makyla Nitzel logged seven hits, with two of those being triples and one a double. Breanna Ray had a two-bagger to highlight her five hits, while Hannah Harris and McKinley Stilley had four singles apiece. Sarah Nitzel added three singles and a triple to the mix of hits.

Allie Harris hit a double and two singles, followed by singles from Keely Poolaw and Audrey Gathers.

Makyla Nitzel threw all five games for the Chieftains, going 3-2 over 29 2/3 innings. She allowed 32 runs off 51 hits and 22 walks against 16 strikeouts.
