Edgar Eugene Douglas was born in El Reno on July 23, 1941, to Newton Edgar Douglas and Frances Marguerite Payne, both of whom preceded him in death.

He is survived by a brother, Bob Douglas of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Kathy Phillips of Yukon; an aunt, Dorothea Paulk of Calumet; two sons, Patrick and Michael Douglas, both of Edmond; a daughter, Alicia Rambo of Blanchard; and four grandchildren, Rex Douglas of Edmond, Rebekah Rambo of Blanchard and Dale and Dillen Rambo of Houston, Texas.

Gene passed away in Oklahoma City on Sept. 11, 2021.

He dedicated his life to counseling and therapy, achieving a bachelor's degree at Central State College and a master's degree in education at North Texas State University. He began a doctoral degree at the Texas Women's University in Denton. His credentials included Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Throughout his life, he continued his education, earning many certifications, his last at the age of 79.

Gene focused most of his attention on overlooked and underserved people in his community, working with disabled veterans, prisoners, children and victims of domestic abuse.

In his youth, Gene served in the National Guard and the Peace Corps. During college, he spent a year with a family in Norway. Gene loved nature and science and spent time reading and sharing articles about astronomy, archaeology, physics and medical breakthroughs. He had a lifelong interest in politics, supporting candidates and causes and even once running for city council. He was an outspoken supporter of Black Lives Matter.

Gene attended the Unitarian Universalist Church for at least two decades, first in Lawton and then in Edmond. He considered the members of his church among his closest friends.

Services were held Sept. 18 in the Matthews Funeral Home Chapel in Edmond.
