Virus cases rising

New infections of COVID-19 in El Reno hit triple digits

As the debate over masks and vaccines to combat the Delta variant of the COVID-19 pandemic grows, so have the numbers of new cases reported to the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

Canadian County remains the fourth highest in the state for total number of coronavirus cases since the pandemic began more than 18 months ago. The latest OSDH numbers show an increase of 566 cases in the past seven days to 19,148.

The county had four new deaths from the virus, three of those in Yukon, while recoveries rose 453 to 18,229. The split leaves the county with 919 active cases.

Over the past 29 days, the county has reported 1,618 new cases for an average of 55.79 cases per day. Recoveries over the same period were up 943 or 32.5 per day.

It's the fifth straight week for cases to rise in the county.

El Reno saw its largest jump in cases since July 20 with 120 new positive tests reported in the past seven days. It's the first time for the city to hit triple digits in new cases in more than three months.

Since the start of the pandemic, El Reno has had 2,753 overall cases and 44 deaths. Over the past 29 days there have been 204 new cases for an average of 7.03 per day.

The good news is El Reno also saw its largest jump in recoveries, with 80 cases moved from active to recovered in the past seven days. It's the fourth straight week for increased recoveries and the second in double digits.

El Reno has 2,617 total recoveries, leaving the city with 136 active cases.

In addition to the three new deaths, Yukon reported 258 new COVID-19 cases in the last seven days, leaving the city with an overall count of 10,605 cases and 88 deaths.

Yukon has seen 899 new cases over the last 29 days or 31 per day. Recoveries jumped 239 to 10,147, leaving the city with 458 active cases.

Mustang also saw its largest jump since July 20 with 110 new cases in the past week. The city has a 29-day increase of 311 cases or 10.72 per day and an overall case count of 3,278 and 46 deaths.

Recoveries were also up by 71 to 3,070, leaving Mustang with 208 active cases.

Piedmont had 33 new cases in a week, giving the city 112 over the past 29 days or 3.86 per day. Recoveries had their highest jump with 36 to 1,326, leaving the city with 58 active cases.

Okarche had nine new cases in the last week for a 275 total. Recoveries were up three to 262, leaving the town with 13 active cases.

Calumet had six new cases, its largest jump in more than a month, for a 167 total. Recoveries were up three to 162, leaving the town with five active cases.

Union City also had its biggest one-week spike with five new cases for a 162 total. There were two recoveries, leaving seven active cases.
