A section of Northwest Expressway was dedicated in memory of Canadian County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Shirley Lanning. Lt. Lanning was killed in a vehicle collision on Feb. 14, 2020, while on duty.

State Rep. Preston Stinson carried a bill in the state Legislature this past session to dedicate the section of State Highway 3 (Northwest Expressway) from Morgan Road to Sara Road as the Lt. Shirley Lanning Memorial Highway.

“We are extremely grateful to the Department of Transportation and those legislators that helped make this possible and we will forever love and remember Lt. Shirley Lanning,” said Sheriff Chris West.

Lanning was an investigator for the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office. She had been with the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office since 2017 and had served in law enforcement for more than 30 years. She had previously served with the United States Marshal's Office, Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office and the University of Central Oklahoma Police Department. The dedication was attended by numerous co-workers, friends and the law enforcement community, said Major Adam Flowers.
