The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of a 45-year-old woman who was being held in the Canadian County Jail. 

Undersheriff Kevin Ward said Crystal Mason was booked into the jail on Tuesday, July 28 after being stopped by Oklahoma City police. Mason, along with a man were alleged to be in a stolen vehicle, Ward said. Ward said both were booked into the county jail at about 6 a.m., after initially being taken into custody about 5 a.m.

Around 10:30 a.m., Ward said a detention officer noticed Mason was shaking and did not appear well. She was taken to the jail medical area and examined. An ambulance was called and Ward said the ambulance crew also worked to treat Mason. She was taken by ambulance to Baptist Integris Hospital in Oklahoma City where she was pronounced deceased. 

Ward said the OSBI was contacted to investigate the death and to provide an “independent review.” He said the OSBI will turn its findings over to the Canadian County District Attorney's Office where a decision will be made as to whether any further action is necessary. 

Emails and social media photos sent to the Tribune show Mason in her booking photo at the jail. A hand appears to be touching Mason's shoulder and some suggested it appeared she was being held up. Ward said the photo does not indicate that. He agreed a hand is seen in the photo but it does not appear to be supporting the woman, he said. Ward said the photo would be part of the OSBI investigation.
