El Reno students looking forward to extracurricular events such as the prom and graduation should not give up hope, but everything depends on what happens in the coming days and weeks.

The prom was set for April 17. Superintendent Craig McVay said it has been postponed due to the statemandated lockdown.

“I won’t say it’s canceled yet because I want to see what we can put together with class sponsors like maybe having it in June.

“I want the parents and kids to hold out some hope. We will poll the kids and see what they want to do,” said McVay.

Commencement exercises, set for May 21 at Memorial Stadium, are also on hold and not canceled since the closure of school facilities is set to expire a week before that.

“We are certain that we are leaving graduation on our calendar for now. Not having it will be determined by the CDC, the mayor and the governor. If we get approval as late as May 20, we will have graduation on May 21.

“We are 100 percent certain that we can get the Class of 2020 educated and transcripted before that date,” said McVay.
