Cold weather safety tips from the City of El Reno
Cold Weather Safety Tips
With severe cold, ice, and snow possible this weekend, the Development Services Department encourages everyone to take a few simple steps to stay warm, safe, and avoid preventable hazards.
Space Heater & Electrical Safety (For Everyone)
• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from furniture, curtains, and anything that can burn
• Never leave space heaters unattended or use them while sleeping
• Do not use extension cords or power strips with space heaters- plug directly into a wall outlet
• Extension cords are for temporary use only and should never run under rugs, through doorways, or across walkways
• Avoid overloading outlets to reduce fire risk
Temporary Heating Safety
• Never use ovens, grills, or outdoor heaters to heat indoor spaces
• Only use heating devices approved for indoor use and follow manufacturer instructions
• Ensure fuel-burning appliances are properly vented to help prevent carbon monoxide hazards
For Renters
• Use heating equipment safely and as intended
• Keep exits, balconies, and walkways clear of snow, ice, and clutter
• Report heating issues, frozen pipes, or electrical concerns to your landlord promptly
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and notify the property owner if they are not working
• Never block or tamper with emergency exits or safety devices
For Property Owners & Managers
• Ensure heating systems are operating properly and well maintained
• Keep sidewalks, stairs, and common areas clear of snow and ice
• Address frozen or leaking pipes quickly to prevent damage
• Make sure occupants know where the water shutoff is located in case of frozen or burst pipes
• Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and functioning
• Maintain safe electrical systems and avoid improper or permanent use of extension cords
Our goal is education and prevention, helping everyone stay safe during cold weather. A little preparation now can prevent fires, injuries, and property damage later. Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe and warm this weekend!
