Club learns about holiday traditions
The Underwood Club of Oklahoma Home and Community Education met recently with Renee’ Schweitzer serving as hostess. Other members attending were Janan Fletcher, Ann Ricketts and Vicki Duncan, along with guest, Sheila Peters.
Duncan called the meeting to order. Ricketts led in the Pledge of Allegiance, with Fletcher giving the treasurer’s report.
It was noted the club received a check for $100 for its booth and cookie jar entries.
It was suggested that instead of playing Dirty Santa at the Christmas party, everyone would bring $20 to be given to one of the Canadian County youth agencies.
Schweitzer presented the lesson on International Holiday/Traditions Around the World. A snippet of 33 countries’ practices was read.
In Japan, a traditional holiday dinner means a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Decorating a Christmas tree with artificial spider webs or ornaments in the shape of spiders is a long-standing Ukrainian tradition.
A massive tomato fight is held annually in Bunol, Spain, where people pelt each other with ripe tomatoes.
In the Czech Republic, unmarried women traditionally throw a shoe over their shoulder on Christmas Eve to predict their romantic future.
Next meeting will be held at noon Nov. 11 in the Fletcher home. Visitors are always welcome to attend.
