Canadian County commissioners last week approved an agreement for fiscal year 2024 with the Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service to “perform cooperative extension services on behalf of Canadian County.” The annual agreement is typically approved after the county finalizes its fiscal year budget.

“We appreciate your continued support,” Canadian County Extension Director Kyle Worthington told commissioners.

“It helps us in our endeavors to serve the communities in Canadian County.”

A $3.6 million remodeling project for the Canadian County Health Department has gotten a little costlier.

A 33,000-square-foot building at 6100 East Highway 66 just west of Evans Road is being renovated for a new county health clinic and offices. The work is due to be finished in April 2024.

Renovations started this fall after commissioners approved a “maximum guaranteed price” of $3,598,755 for the remodeling project.

Earlier this month, commissioners approved a change order request from their construction manager, Lingo Construction Services.

El Reno High School’s boys basketball team opens the 2023-24 season Friday night at home against Carl Albert, which leaves little time for the Indians to complete a reload of its roster.

Yet that is exactly what head coach Rodney Haydon is asking of fans - time and trust.

“We lost five of our top seven guys (graduation) from last year and that is a lot of playing time and experience. It’s going to take a little time before we jell together,” said Haydon.

He’s asking for the trust factor in the fact reloading teams is nothing new to both the coach and the program.

El Reno High School senior Iliana Ashford (center seated) signed a national letter of intent to play softball for Oklahoma City University.

Ashford was an all-district and all-region player for the Indians and will be an early graduate according to her father.

Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon (0) tries to dodge a group of BYU tacklers in the first half of the Cowboys 40-34 double overtime win.

Gordon scored five touchdowns to help send OSU into the Big 12 title game.

The city of El Reno will argue before the Oklahoma Supreme Court that a convicted sex offender should not be allowed to live within 2,000 feet of a park. The hearing is set for 10 a.m. Nov. 30 in the courtroom of the Supreme Court inside the State Capitol.

Kelly Patrick Donaldson brought suit against the city after being told he was not allowed to live within 2,000 feet of Lake El Reno.

The city contends the area is a park. Donaldson contends it is not a park and is zoned agricultural.

With more than 600 head of bison managed by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, the tribes were a natural choice to work with the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority in promoting a documentary created by one of America’s best-known storytellers.

The tribes herd was recently spotlighted through a film by Ken Burns titled “The American Buffalo.”
