Let’s go fly a kite

Body

Creativity took flight at Lake El Reno as residents of all ages gathered for a free Kite Building Workshop.

The event was hosted June 13 at the RV Clubhouse.

The come-and-go event brought together families from across the community for a day of hands-on learning, creativity and fun.

Approximately 30 kites were decorated and assembled during the workshop, with children, parents and grandparents working side-by-side to create colorful designs before learning how to prepare their kites for flight.

Another Oklahoma County Jail sales tax proposal flops

Body

Oklahoma County commissioners who have proposed a sales tax to help fund the county’s beleaguered jail project haven’t gotten the ball out of the infield this year after a proposal by District 3 Interim Commissioner Paul Foster died for lack of a second during the board’s meeting Wednesday, but something similar may still make its way to voters in 2026.

All-State efforts show ER boys soccer headed upward

Having three players named to the Class 5A West roster for the Oklahoma Soccer Coaches Association’s All-State Game, then having the trio turn in standout performances, is a telltale sign the tide is changing for El Reno High School’s boys soccer program.

“We’ve had pretty good back-to-back years and we’re going to have a good team next year. Obviously you have to refill the senior spots from those that made All-State, but we got a lot of return in production coming back.

“I think things are starting to change,” said head coach Joe Patton.

Twister or wind?

El Reno was hit hard by the Monday morning storm that blew through central Oklahoma, but fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported, police said.

Assistant Police Chief Kirk Dickerson said six homes “suffered extensive damage,” all in the Skyview Addition on the west side of town.

Dickerson said three families have been displaced by the storm that was said to have produced winds of more than 80 miles per hour.

Several homes in west El Reno hit hard as damage appears extensive

Mike Murray lived through a tornado and weather experts will have a hard time convincing him of any other outcome once damage surveys from Monday morning’s storms are complete.

“It was a tornado. I saw one tree twist and that tree is probably 4 foot at its base.”

Murray said the tree was lifted up and thrown into a pond.

“At the same time, I watched another tree on the other side of Darren Koehn’s property and it spun and went down in a different direction,” said Murray.

Website in the works for county

Canadian County is working toward a website design and ADA compliance.

“There’s a deadline, I want to say it’s in 2027, to have the website completely ADA compliant,” said Lacey Dawson, District 2 commissioner.

“We think we’re really close. We’ve got someone that’s dedicating time to work on that, Ashley Ragsdale, who is our administrative assistant for the commissioners.”

ADA stands for Americans With Disabilities Act.
