Alvin Schones, longtime El Reno resident, died April 16 at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.  

The wake for Alvin will be 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 18.

Both services will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home. 

Filling up the spotlight

El Reno and The Filling Station keep attracting attention. 

Last week a video crew hired by the Oklahoma Department of Tourism was in town, filming a commercial the state plans to air both nationally and internationally.

It’s part of the promotion of the 100th anniversary of Route 66, said Lyndsay Bayne. Bayne serves as Director of Public Information and Marketing for the City of El Reno.

Thunder court refresh

Body

Kam Pond and Rhett Coonfield shoot hoops on the community basketball court in Calumet which carries an Oklahoma City Thunder theme.

The court was restored recently as part of the NBA team’s commitment to refresh the 31 such themed courts statewide.

Renovations included new paint, graphics, backboards and rims.

Rumble the Bison was on hand for the ribbon-cutting along with Thunder entertainers.

The court was originally dedicated in 2017.

City urges community help for Spring Clean

The City of El Reno is inviting residents, business owners and volunteers to take part in a community-wide Spring Cleanup designed to freshen up neighborhoods, public spaces and corridors ahead of a busy season of community events and Route 66 travel.

The “Get Your Kicks on a Clean Route 66” initiative will take place Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18, beginning at 9 a.m. each day. Participants will join efforts across the community to pick up trash, pull weeds, plant flowers and assist neighbors with yard work.

El Reno High School celebrated the annual prom on Friday.

Students danced and laughed the night away as the school year draws closer to the end.

Argument leads to stabbing of 13-year-old boy

An El Reno teen was stabbed, allegedly by another teen earlier this month, police said. 

Police reports said two 13-year-old boys were involved in an argument when one of them pulled out a knife and stabbed the other. The incident happened April 2 on East Foreman near North Donald.

Police reported they were notified of the incident at about 8:15 p.m.

The injured teen was treated by an EMS crew at the scene and later taken to a trauma center for evaluation and further treatment. The wound was said to be in the left side of his back. 

Route 66 trading cards out April 15

The Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership, in collaboration with statewide Route 66 organizations, is launching a collectible series of trading cards to celebrate the Route 66 Centennial. 

Beginning April 15, the cards will be available for $1 each at locations along the Route 66 corridor from Illinois to California.

As part of the launch, The Filling Station Visitor Center will serve as the exclusive location to purchase a Pony Bridge trading card, offering visitors a unique opportunity to collect a piece of local Route 66 history.
