West introduces Gabbard at NSA Conference

Canadian County Sheriff Chris West, president of the National Sheriffs Association, introduced Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard at the opening session of the National Sheriffs Association Winter Conference in Washington, D.C. last week.

Gabbard was the keynote speaker in the opening session of the winter conference, speaking to a crowd of more than 300.

No Canadian County Fair Board election needed after no opposition filings

No Canadian County Fair Board election is required after only the incumbents filed for three seats on the nine-member board.

Filing declarations of candidacy for the Canadian County Fair Association board of directors during the recent weeklong filing period were:

▶  Yukon’s Chad Detrick (District 1)

▶  El Reno’s Brent Hunt (District 2)

▶  Calumet’s Michael Beard (District 3)

El Reno offense flips switch in 41-point 5A-2 blowout

After scoring only three baskets in its previous 29 minutes of play, El Reno High School’s girls basketball team flipped on the offensive switch and steamrolled to a 66-25 road win over Southeast.

The 66 points is the second highest point total for El Reno this season and the highest in District 5A-2 play.

The Indians move to 13-8 on the year and 10-3 in the league.

Deanna Jo Tyler of Edmond passed away after a courageous battle with lung cancer on Feb. 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Deanna - known affectionately as “Dee” to those who loved her - was born Dec. 16, 1949, to Marvin “Pat” and Olga Feddersen in El Reno.

She was raised in Union City and graduated from Union City High School in 1967.

On May 29, 1970, Dee married the love of her life, Gerald Tyler, and together they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage. Their bond was the foundation of a life filled with family, devotion, and countless memories.

El Reno sweeps Spartans as roster edges toward full strength in 5A-2 road win

Welcoming two of its four missing starters back into the lineup, El Reno High School’s boys basketball team locked up fifth place in the District 5A-2 standings with an 81-54 road win over Southeast.

It was the third meeting with the Spartans this season, two in district play, with El Reno winning all three. The 27-point margin was the largest of the three games, with the other two being single-digit wins.

El Reno moves to 9-12 on the season and 6-7 in the District 5A-2 standings, two games in front of Guthrie.

Norbert Grellner died Feb. 11, 2026, at his home in Okarche.

A vigil service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, with Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16.

Both services will be at Holy Trinity Church in Okarche under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

A series of wins through the middle and upper weights carried El Reno High School’s wrestling team to a 60-23 win over Geary in the final duel of the 2025-26 season.

The 37-point win snapped a four-match losing streak for El Reno, finishing with a 3-9 record.

El Reno never trailed after getting forfeit wins at 106, 113 and 120 pounds.

Geary battled back to within 18-17 behind a technical fall at 126 pounds, a pin at 132 pounds and the Indians forfeit at 138 pounds.

Diesel Baker (144) swung the momentum back toward El Reno with a 2:22 fall over Zach Castleberry.

Services for Emmalein Marie Schroeder of Okarche will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastors Jeff Klade and Ray Smith officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Emmalein passed away Feb. 9, 2026.

Chieftains bounce back, Warriors, Tigers post wins

Calumet High School’s boys basketball team showed little letdown from its high-profile loss to top-ranked Okarche, bouncing back with a three-game win streak and retention of the Washita Valley Conference title.

The Chieftains, ranked second in Class B1, closed out the regular season with a 22-3 record after beating Sentinel (72-50) and Shattuck (95-43). Between those wins was a 78-54 decision over Binger-Oney in the WVC Shootout.

It’s the fifth straight year for Calumet to win the conference tile and the seventh time in the last nine seasons.
