Myles Ann Woolard, 85, of El Reno, went to see her Lord and Savior on Sept. 3, 2025. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Oubrey Woolard Jr.

Myles Ann was born in Waxahachie, Texas, on March 28, 1940, to Miles and Lillie Lightsey. She was raised in Waxahachie and graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1958. Her spirit and enthusiasm was portrayed in her role as cheerleader throughout her sophomore, junior and senior years.

Parent describes Minco bus crash fears

It’s the notification no parent wants to receive, but for Julie and David Bilderback, Monday night’s bus accident involving Minco High School’s softball team was the second time the El Reno couple have heard the news their child has been involved in an accident. 

Presley Bilderback, a sophomore, was one of the 13 players and coaches on the Minco bus that rolled several times. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported the bus struck a deer on Highway 152, eight miles west of Highway 81.

Saddle up: Public invited to join USCA Honor Ride

Body

The U.S. Cavalry Association is inviting the public to join in the Honor Ride that will kick off the annual National Cavalry Competition. 

The Honor Ride will take place at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23. Former El Reno School Superintendent Craig McVay, along with officials from the Cavalry Association, will lead the Honor Ride.

They will be joined by military riders from across the U.S. The ride will pay honor to the people who are buried in the historic cemetery at Fort Reno.

Grant to expand Blessing Baskets reach to the elderly

El Reno Blessing Baskets received an Older Adult Grant from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation to purchase new equipment that will help serve more food-insecure senior citizens in western Canadian County.

The funding, for essential equipment necessary to expand capacity and improve efficiency, makes it possible to provide seniors with access to nutritious food and essentials.

The equipment the grant help fund included hydraulic lifts, special carts, shelving and sturdy tables.

Redlands Community College celebrates 10.4 percent enrollment growth

Redlands Community College’s enrollment has increased for the eighth consecutive semester.

This fall, enrollment increased 10.4 percent, with the greatest jump occurring among returning students with a 33.2 percent increase in sophomore enrollment.

Concurrent enrollment continues to grow with an 18 percent rise in the number of high school juniors and seniors getting a head start on their college education.

Sacred Heart lands ‘big check’

Owen Canfield, director of the Catholic Schools Opportunity Fund, brought a “big check” to El Reno's Sacred Heart Catholic School last week. 

Sacred Heart Principal Shannon Statton said it wasn’t just the size of the physical check, but the amount received was described as “life-changing” for many of the students. 

Statton said the $104,900 distributed by the Catholic Schools Opportunity Fund helps 47 students at Sacred Heart. Scholarships range from $8,877 to $500 per student.

West highlighted in issue of Sheriff and Deputy mag

Canadian County Sheriff Chris West was featured on the July/August cover of Sheriff and Deputy magazine. The publication is produced by the National Sheriffs Association. West was elected president of the NSA for 2025-26.

The cover photo was taken at the Canadian County Historical Museum. 

West penned his first President’s Column for the publication. In it he paid tribute to the lawmen who have served the national organization that was founded in 1940.

Deadline for voter sign-up on Sept. 19

Body

Friday, Sept. 19 is the last day to apply for voter registration in order to be eligible to vote in the Oct. 14 El Reno Public Schools, City of Oklahoma City and Hinton Public Schools special elections, Canadian County Election Board Secretary Allen Arnold said.

El Reno voters will consider a $69 million bond issue proposed by El Reno Public Schools. 

Arnold said that persons who are U.S. citizens, residents of Oklahoma and at least 17 1/2 years old are eligible to apply for voter registration. You must be at least 18 years old to vote.

Marlene Walker-Payne

Body

Marlene Walker-Payne (Hawkins), a proud member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma and a great-great-granddaughter of Chief White Antelope, passed away Sept. 1, 2025, at River Oaks Skilled Nursing and Therapy in El Reno. She was 86, just 17 days shy of her 87th birthday.
