Damrosch Club Guest Tea Day set for May 14

Body

The Damrosch Music Club will hold a Guest Day Tea on Wednesday, May 14 beginning at 10 a.m. The performance will take place at Wesley United Methodist Church.

The group will be presenting the best of its season’s musical selections, both choral and ensemble. A small reception will follow and all are welcome to attend.

The Community Chorus of Central Oklahoma will present “We Remember Them” on May 15 at 7 p.m. and May 18 at 2:30 p.m. at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church located at 600 Garth Brooks, Yukon.

Jack Edward Hunt was born Jan. 13, 1933, to Ed and Gladys Hunt in El Reno, upstairs above the Napa Store on Rock Island. 

Before graduating from El Reno High School in 1953, Jack played football and was a member of the band. He showed hogs and steers for the 4-H Club, being awarded Reserve Grand Steer at the Tulsa State Fair and at the Kansas City Fair.

After graduating in 1953, Jack embarked on a new chapter of his life by marrying his love, Carol Jean VonTungeln, on May 9, 1954.

Wake service for Mary Elizabeth Sankey will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, with funeral services on Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m., both at the Concho Emergency Response Center. Burial will follow in the Concho Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Mary died May 2, 2025, at St. Anthony Healthplex in El Reno. She was born May 24, 1962, in Clinton.

She was raised in Canton, later moving to Geary and lastly to El Reno.

She was a certified nursing assistant working for Grace Living Center in El Reno and was a member of the Pentecostal Church.

Back nine troubles hurt ER’s state bid

OKLAHOMA CITY – Getting the chance to correct some back nine miscues from day one of the 2025 Class 5A Girls State Golf Championships never materialized for third-ranked El Reno High School.

Overnight rains rolled into day two, forcing the cancellation of the final 18 holes and awarding of the state championship based off the numbers from the opening round.

Unfortunate events which hampered El Reno.

Second-ranked Duncan was crowned state champ with a 333, six shots better than top-ranked Carl Albert (339).

Duncan shuts out El Reno, Indians playoff jinx extended

DUNCAN – In what proved to be the second closest of the eight first-round matches of the Class 5A playoffs, El Reno High School’s girls soccer team gave up two goals to Duncan’s Dasha Givens in a shutout loss to the Demons.

The 2-0 setback ends El Reno’s season with a 7-7 record and extends a first-round postseason losing streak that dates back to 2015.

The Indians are 0-7 in playoff games over the past decade.

The match with Duncan was close as the Demons closed with 22 total shots, of which 13 were on frame.

Enid surges late to beat El Reno

After rallying from three down to even the score, El Reno High School’s baseball team gave up five runs over the final two innings to close out the regular season with a 9-4 loss to Class 6A Enid.

The loss dropped El Reno to 14-10-2 on the year heading into the regional round of the playoffs. The Indians were slated to play in the 5A West Region 4 Championships at Elgin, facing Santa Fe South in the first round.

El Reno High School seniors, from left, Raegan Bugaj, Phallyn McHenry-Guzman and Emmary Elizondo signed college scholarship papers last week.

Bugaj inked with Kansas-based Friends University, while McHenry-Guzman will stay in El Reno to play for Redlands Community College. Elizondo will head south to Lawton to play for Cameron University.

Redlands secures winning season, pair set new marks

While the goal of making the field for the NJCAA Region II, Division II Championships slipped its grasp, Redlands Community College’s baseball team closed the season as one of the hottest clubs in the league.

The Cougars won six of their final eight regular-season games including a series victory over Murray State College. Redlands defeated the Aggies 3-2, 7-5 and 10-3 after losing the opener 4-3.

Redlands’ 6-2 record over the final eight games tied for the second best mark with Southeast Arkansas in the 14-team Region II, Division II lineup.
