No.1 Calumet a round closer to state; Tigers stunned

Calumet High School’s baseball team, which has held the top spot in the Class B poll the entire season, is now two victories away from a repeat trip to the OSSAA Fall State Baseball Championships.

The Chieftains, now 24-4-1 following a 5-5 tie with Amber Poscasset (No.5 in Class A) in a tuneup game last week, will host the Class B, Region 1 Championships.

State-ranked Sentinel (No.8) and Caney (No.9) are in the regional along with Vici. The winner advances to state as Calumet is seeking its third straight trip to the fall classic and fourth in school history.

Union City advances to regional; Calumet bats cold in district bids

Fueled by an offensive explosion, unranked Union City High School’s fast-pitch softball team took a step closer to its first-ever trip to state by winning the Class A, District 32 title.

The Tigers moved to 19-12 on the season with a win over Drumright (4-3) in extra innings and sweeping two games from Davenport (5-4/17-1) to win the district.

Union City was slated to play in the Class A, Region 5 Championship with the winner headed to state.

Redlands soccer drops first two matches of road swing

Redlands Community College women’s soccer team dropped the first two matches of a four-game road swing in NJCAA Region 2 action.

The losses came to Murray State College (8-1) and the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain (8-1) as Redlands slipped to 1-8-1 on the season and 1-5 in the region standings.

Ashanti Lewis led the Cougars for the two matches with five shots on goal and one assist.

Jordan Wentworth logged three shots and two goals, one off an assist by Elizabeth Bolton.

Services for Tara Lynore Allen of Minco will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Minco High School Auditorium, with burial following at the Pocasset Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Huber-Reynolds Funeral Home. 

Tara died Sept. 25, 2024, in Tuttle. She was born Aug. 7, 1974, in Falls Church, Va. She had lived in many places as a military child and graduated from Mustang High School in 1992. She was employed as a private caregiver, taking care of people in their homes.
