Graveside service for Barbara Hathaway was held Thursday, Sept. 12 at the El Reno Cemetery with Rev. Scott Keneda officiating. Services were under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home. 

Barbara died Sept. 7, 2024, at Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City. She was born Sept. 26, 1945, to Robert and Gene Strohl in Champaign, Ill.

She was a graduate of Champaign High School. Champaign was also the location where she met Glen Hathaway. Glen and Barbara were married March 21, 1965. They moved to El Reno in 1977.

Indians bitten by big plays

Body

For two teams that live and die with the running game, both El Reno and Piedmont high schools got their “three yards” during last week’s Canadian County bedlam game.

However, it was the Wildcats with more “clouds of dust” as Piedmont defeated El Reno 27-14 for its fourth straight win in the rivalry.

“This group of players has never beaten Piedmont and I think it’s gotten into their heads a little bit,” said El Reno head coach Russell Cook.

Matthew Kyle Willey was born July 18, 1983, in Watonga. He passed away Sept. 3, 2024, in Oklahoma City.

Matt attended school first in Geary, graduated from Ponca City High School and later Pioneer Technology Center in Ponca City. 

Matthew was employed by Mertz Manufacturing Company in Ponca City and was a specialty welder with plasma cutting projects. He also worked for Dexter Axle in El Reno. His other employments included security officer at Diamondback Correctional Facility in Watonga and a wildland firefighter with the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes at Concho.

El Reno builds three-game streak

Body

A three-game win streak, the second longest of the season, has pulled El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team into sole possession of fourth place in the District 5A-2 standings.

Now 8-5 on the year, El Reno is knocking on the door for third place in the league after beating Del City (13-2) and sweeping a set from Santa Fe South by scores of 17-6 and 10-0.

The home victory over the Eagles came after El Reno scored 13 unanswered runs. The Indians are now 4-3 inside the Ashbrook North Complex for the season.

A celebration of life for Tony Lynn Reed will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Huber-Benson Funeral Home, with burial following in the El Reno Cemetery.

Tony passed away Sept. 5, 2024, at Integris Canadian Valley Hospital in Yukon. He was born Jan. 4, 1960, in Lawton to David Reed and Helen (Lunsford) Chamberlain.

A 1978 graduate of El Reno High School, he was a welder with CMI Roadbuilding before starting his own business, Custom Welded Products.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and member of the El Reno Cruisers for 10 years.

Spikers make quick work of Elgin Owls

Body

Allowing just 35 points over three games, El Reno High School’s volleyball team earned its first victory in Suburban Conference action with a 3-0 decision over Elgin.

The 25-6/25-13/25-16 win moved El Reno to 9-9 on the season and 1-2 in the Suburban Conference standings.

The Indians are tied with the Owls for fourth in the league.

El Reno resident Nancy Keys died Sept. 7, 2024, at River Oaks Skilled Nursing and Therapy.

Services are pending with Huber-Benson Funeral Home. 

El Reno lands shooting sports grant

The OTSA Shooting Park is going to get a bit of a makeover after El Reno Public Schools Shooting Sports Program was awarded a $50,000 grant to help make improvements. 

MidwayUSA Foundation awarded $2.3 million in Range Development Grants to 103 recipients in the country. El Reno was one of three high schools in Oklahoma to capture the funds. The others were Altus and Fort Supply.

Lindsay phone threat traced back to El Reno students

Law enforcement and officials with Lindsay Public Schools said the opening day of last week’s Lindsay Softball Festival was called off after a threatening phone call was received. 

The call was traced back to a juvenile in El Reno, said Canadian County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Adam Flowers.

El Reno’s softball team was slated to play two games that day in the festival. The team had to return home after games were canceled, said El Reno Public Schools Athletic Director Rodney Haydon.
