State pass eludes Indians at Class 5A West Regional

MIDWEST CITY – Whether it was the rain delay, a gusting south wind or a case of the jitters at the end of the day El Reno High School’s boys golf team let its ultimate season goal slip through it grasp.

Playing in the Class 5A West Regional on the John Conrad Municipal Golf Course, El Reno missed a state berth by 12 shots, winding up the season with a seventh place finish.

Course management troubles over final round cost El Reno golfers shot at top five

Final round hiccups in course management cost El Reno High School’s girls golf team a shot at the top five at the 2024 Oklahoma Girls Class 5A State Golf Championships.

Playing the Muskogee Country Club Course, El Reno started the final round in sixth place after shooting an opening-day round of 407.

The Indians were 19 strokes behind Durant for fifth.

Wilma Hale

Graveside service for Wilma Jean Hale of Augusta, Kan., will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3 at the El Reno Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Headley Funeral Chapel of Augusta.

Wilma passed away Friday, April 26, 2024, in Augusta, Kan.

She was born Nov. 1, 1932, in Chickasha.

She worked as a dispatcher for a taxi company and a hostess for Hensley’s Restaurant.

On March 1, 1981, she married Warren Hale in Altus, and he preceded her in death.

Indians stung in playoffs

Despite logging 11 more shots than Choctaw, El Reno High School’s girls soccer team struggled to get the ball past Yellowjackets goalie Kiley Loage in the knockout round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Hosting its first playoff match since 2018, El Reno’s season ended with a 3-1 loss to a physical Choctaw squad.

The Indians were one of three 5A-1 teams to exit the postseason in the stage, with only Carl Albert surviving with a 2-1 win over Santa Fe South.

El Reno, the 5A-1 runner-up, closes the year with a 6-5 record, though the team outshot Choctaw 26-15.

El Reno drops final match

El Reno High School’s boys soccer team missed the playoffs and closed out the season with a 5-1 road loss at Woodward.

The setback dropped El Reno, with losses in its final five matches, to 4-10 on the season.

The Indians lone goal came from Tristan Chandler. Other El Reno shots were made by Uriel Arellano, Alan Gonsalez and Charliee Pena.

Aldo De La Torre was in net for El Reno, logging eight saves.

Eddy Davis

Services for Eddy Leo Davis of Okarche will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 3 in the Benson Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Allen Noble of Caring Hearts Hospice officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Okarche under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Eddy died April 26, 2024, at Cimarron Nursing Center in Kingfisher.

Indians drop regular-season finale

Being held to four hits, El Reno High School’s baseball team wrapped up the regular season with an 11-3 road loss to Class 6A powerhouse Edmond Santa Fe.

El Reno, which was set to open the Class 5A, Region 3 Championships Thursday in Duncan, slipped to 17-17 on the season, having lost four of its final five regular-season games.

The Timberwolves scored five runs in the first inning before El Reno closed the gap with two runs in the third. Santa Fe added four runs in its half of the third and two more runs in the fifth inning.

El Reno scored a run in the fifth.
