Paced by three of its top five bags shooting under 100, El Reno High School’s boys golf team placed eighth out of 22 teams at the 2024 Sand Springs Invitational.

The Indians carded a 366 on the Canyons at Black Jack Ridge, a 6,133-yard, par-71 course. Broken Arrow won the event with a 309, followed by Owasso (318), Poteau (325), Broken Arrow JV (334), Sand Springs (334), Enid (335) and Casady (342) ahead of El Reno.

The Indians bested Muskogee by three strokes and Regent Prep and Ponca City by four shots.

Chickasha takes two from EHS

El Reno High School’s soccer teams dropped down a classification last week to face Chickasha as the two schools renewed the U.S. 81 Battle on the pitch.

The Fighting Chicks got the upper hand as the girls snapped El Reno’s two-match win streak with a 5-0 shutout.

The non-district loss dropped the Indians to 2-2 on the season.

The El Reno boys suffered their third straight loss, a 6-1 decision, to slip to 2-4 on the season.

The Indians goal was by Josh Gonzalez on his lone shot of the match.

Union City rallies past Pats; Calumet rebounds from loss

OKLAHOMA CITY - Union City High School’s baseball team warmed up from the frigid temperatures at Dolese Park and a 4-2 deficit to score 13 unanswered runs to defeat Southwest Covenant 15-4.

Seven of those runs came in the third inning as the Tigers improved to 9-1 on the season with their seventh straight win.

Union City went 6-of-16 (.375) from the plate and took advantage of eight walks in the rally. Carson Biffle led the offense with a 2-for-3 effort with a pair of doubles leading to three scores and three runs batted in. Brycen Bilyea added a double and two ribbies.

Peake claims medalist title, RCC team 13th in Arkansas

Battling cold weather and another field of four-year programs, Redlands Community College women’s golf team placed 13th last week at the 2024 Hardscrabble Invitational.

Played on the par-70 Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith, Ark., Redlands carded a 65-over, 345 team score for the 18-hole event. It was shorted from 36 holes to a one-day event due to weather.

El Reno High School juniors Emmary Elizondo (1) and Lilly Thomas (00) will be seeking to defend El Reno’s state title for the 2024-25 season.

El Reno High School began its list of state-level Special Olympics events with Unified Volleyball.

Athletes with special needs were paired with partners for the event which was held in Norman at the University of Oklahoma.

El Reno High School is experiencing one of its most successful years on the various athletic playing surfaces as well as in the classroom with its many student organizations.

“I’m extremely proud of what we have been able to do with our Academic Teams as well as speech, debate and all our athletics,” said El Reno Public Schools Superintendent Matt Goucher.

“It’s very positive and goes along with our school’s mission to inspire excellence. I’m proud of all our coaches and kids.”

County men inducted into Hall of Fame

Two longtime supporters of youth agriculture were inducted into the Canadian County Junior Livestock Show Hall of Fame.

The induction came at the conclusion of the annual event that was held at the Canadian County Expo and Event Center.

Fair Board Secretary Brad Tipton said more than 1,000 people attended the Sale of Champions auction and dinner. The crowd feasted on brisket, fish, chicken and side dishes.

Roundabout dirt work

Construction crews have been turning dirt on the roundabout project at the intersection of U.S. 81 and State Highway 66.

The 18-month project is expected to be finished ahead of the Route 66 Centennial celebration in 2026.

State of the Orange

Canadian County 4-H Teen Leaders are taking part in Oklahoma State University’s “State of Orange” campaign designed to provide volunteers an avenue to give back and help those in need.

Living up to the 4-H motto to “Make the Best Better,” Canadian County 4-H’ers have agreed to support a number of causes.

Canadian County 4-H Teen Leaders voted to embark on a 45-day campaign leading up to April 13 to benefit members of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and beneficiaries of the Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center.
