Black-Harmon adds name to 1,000-point scoring list

OKLAHOMA CITY – It took less than three minutes for El Reno High School post player Pauline Black-Harmon to etch her name into the program’s record books for a second time this season.

The career-rebounding leader added her name to the list of the 1,000-point career scorers with a bank shot early in the first period of the Indians 71-24 wire-to-wire victory over Western Heights.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Josiah Reveles knocked down six 3-pointers in the first half and Carter Roman Nose posted his first triple-double of the season as El Reno High School’s boys basketball team defeated Western Heights 78-44.

The win kicked off a two-game road swing for the Indians, who were slated to visit Guthrie Friday. El Reno sweeps the regular-season series with Western Heights with the 34-point win to improve to 16-5 on the year.

Lifters rack up weights, top 5 spots

El Reno High School’s powerlifting teams have found mixed results during the first meets of the 2024 season.

The boys varsity squad placed three in the Little Axe Invitational, led by a gold-medal effort of 810 pounds from Jeremiah Ortiz in the 123-pound bracket. He posted a 335-pound deadlift, followed by a 300-pound squat and a 175-pound bench press.

Tucker McDaniel (145) took silver with a total weight of 860 pounds. His best efforts were a 350-pound deadlift and a 340-pound squat.

Undefeated season was not on Calumet’s to-do list

Jacob Mayfield admits that keeping a zero in the loss column was not a preseason goal of his Calumet High School boys basketball team when the season started in November.

“Sure, we wanted to win every game we played, but going undefeated was not a goal,” said Mayfield.

Yet that’s just what happened after his Class B’s top-ranked Chieftains completed the regular season with a 63-34 win over Binger-Oney in the championship game of the Washita Valley Shootout.

Calumet High School’s girls basketball team will charge into the postseason on a high note after snapping a seven-game losing streak with a 41-35 win over Gracemont in the Washita Valley Shootout.

The win lifted the Chieftains to 2-20 on the season. Calumet will now play Mulhall-Orlando in the semifinals of the Class B, Area 2, District 4 Championships.

Okarche, Union City ride wins into district round of playoffs

After having its 13-game win streak snapped by a four-point loss to Class 2A’s fourth-ranked Hennessey, Okarche High School’s boys basketball team rebounded with back-to-back wins.

The Warriors, ranked fourth in Class A, rallied from the 64-60 loss to the Eagles to beat Class 2A’s 12th-ranked Fairview (76-40) and Cashion (82-45) to close out the regular season with a 20-4 record.

The Warriors are hosting the Class A, Area 1, District 2 Championships and drew a bye into the title game against the winner of the Wellston/Ringwood semifinal.

Centre Theatre to host country music tribute

Country music fans in the area will have a rare treat to step back in time when the Twitty & Lynn Show plays at the Centre Theatre in downtown El Reno. The show is set for 7 p.m. March 7 and tickets are available at elrenoentertainment.com.

Organizers of the show say there’s a moment at the very beginning of the Twitty & Lynn show that affords country music fans the chance to look back in time.

Pink Out basketball

El Reno High School cheerleaders (from left) Ainslee Bailey, Serenity Schnider and Bella Hart accented their Pink Out shirts with pink sunglasses as did the rest of the EHS cheer squad.

The EHS basketball programs held the special night last week during home games with Elgin to show support for breast cancer awareness.

T-shirts were sold to raise funds for the wife of EHS girls wrestling coach Chad Whitney, who is battling cancer.
