Spikers drop four in Noble event

El Reno High School’s volleyball team continues to play opponents tough but is struggling to turn the efforts into marks in the win column.

The Indians slipped to 3-10 on the season after dropping four matches in the recent Noble Invitational, winning one game off the host school en route to a 2-1 defeat.

The other losses were to Lawton MacArthur, ranked seventh in Class 5A, by scores of 25-15/25-14, and fourth-ranked Claremore 25-16/25-13. El Reno dropped a 25-12/25-18 match to Amber-Pocasset.

Redlands blanked by Aggies to open tough run of matches

Body

Redlands Community College women’s soccer team began the first of a three-game set against opponents holding the top four positions in the latest NJCAA Region 2 standings with a 6-0 setback to Murray State College.

The Aggies are second in the league and the loss to MSC dropped Redlands to 1-5 on the season and 1-4 in the Region 2 standings – which is seventh.

The Cougars were held to two shots in the loss, one each from Carlie Golden and Jaidyn Gonzalez.

Tigers snap losing skid with rivalry win

Morgan Brothers belted out two extra base hits and drove in four runs as Union City High School’s fast-pitch softball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 20-10 win over cross-county rival Calumet.

The win lifted the Tigers to 5-12 on the season.

Brothers logged a double and a triple and scored three times in the win after reaching base two more times via walks. Union City had eight hits in the win including a double from Kamryn Cook.

Lily Russell, Trestan Sutton, Skylar Morgan, Payslie Locke and Juliana Pappe added a single each.

Union City walks past rain to earn win; Chieftains take three in Elk City event

It took a trip to Edmond and a turf stadium for Union City High School’s baseball team to beat the rain and get back into the win column with a 15-5 decision over Oklahoma Christian Academy.

Playing at Oklahoma Christian University’s Dobson Field, Union City took advantage of 13 walks and multiple hits from Rocky Carroll and Korbin Cook to improve to 13-8 on the season.

The Tigers dropped out of the top 20 in the latest Class A poll for the second time in three weeks, falling to 22nd despite winning two of its last three games.

Rose Witcher first-grade teacher Anita Hawkins was recently selected as a Bushels for Books winner.

The annual application process results in a number of recipients statewide. The winners each receive a basket of agriculturally accurate books to be used in their classroom.

Books included in the basket are selected from the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture’s book database.

The program is sponsored by the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture and the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee.

Fair fun to remain with midway vet

A tradition that stretches back to 1992 will continue at the 2024 Canadian County Free Fair.

Ten days after the 69th annual county fair wrapped up, a contract for next year’s fair carnival was signed, sealed and delivered.

Canadian County commissioners approved an annual agreement with Great Plains Amusements.

The company will present the carnival from Aug. 21-24, 2024, at the Canadian County Expo and Event Center, 3001 Jensen Road East.

Fundraiser to honor RCC’s Jack Bryant to benefit women’s soccer

In fall 2017, under President Jack Bryant’s leadership, Redlands Community College kicked off its inaugural women’s soccer season thanks to the generous support and partnership from the city of El Reno and El Reno Public Schools.

This month at a gala honoring Bryant on his retirement, the college is launching a fundraising effort to build a soccer field on campus.

OEMA updates fleet with lease of four trucks

A Canadian County landfill and solid waste company is updating its fleet after county commissioners approved a resolution confirming their previous action to allow the Oklahoma Environmental Management Authority (OEMA) to incur debt for the lease purchase of four new vehicles.

“This is a ratification and resolution that will be included into the lease document of the financing that the commissioners have already approved for our indebtedness,” OEMA General Manager David Griesel said.

Oklahoma company picked for clerk’s office scanning project

An Oklahoma company has been selected for an image scanning and enhancement project at the Canadian County Clerk’s Office.

Midwest Printing of Sapulpa submitted the low bid to perform the extensive work.

Their price is $1,798,500 to scan the record books on-site at the Canadian County Administration Building, 201 N. Choctaw. It will take Midwest Printing about one year, according to bid documents.

Canadian County Clerk Sherry Murray recommended county commissioners award the contract to Midwest Printing. Commissioners voted 3-0 to follow her recommendation.
