OSSAA adds no new security protocols after fatal shooting

OKLAHOMA CITY — Despite one school district’s call for minimum safety standards in the wake of a fatal shooting at a high school football game, the governing body for Oklahoma school athletics took no action to change current security regulations.

The board of directors for the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association discussed, but made no decisions, about the possibility of establishing stricter minimum requirements.

Bruce Lynn Lloyd

Bruce Lynn Lloyd was born in Alva, Okla., on July 30, 1952, to Gordon L. Lloyd and Catherine (Campbell) Lloyd. He passed away suddenly in his home in Norman on July 10, 2023, at the age of 70.

Bruce graduated from El Reno High School in 1970. He served in the United States Navy where he was injured, went on to attend El Reno Junior College, graduated from OU and did his graduate work at NYU.

He was the wit, humor, honesty and all-around wisdom to his family. He could always keep the family laughing.

Federal government censorship and manipulation not American

Body

Our government should not be in the business of censoring or manipulating content on social media platforms. However, under the Biden administration, such actions occur far too frequently.

More specifically, Facebook and Twitter, before the takeover by Elon Musk, bowed down to pressure from the White House and changed algorithms and narratives to fit this administration’s agenda.

Michael Stephen Hoefler

Michael Stephen Hoefler, known to his loved ones as Mike/Big Mike, Dad or Papaw, peacefully passed away Sept. 2, 2023, at the age of 72 in El Reno. He was born Aug. 15, 1951, in Shawnee.

Mike will be deeply missed by his daughter, Stephenie Baker and husband, Brad, and his son, Michael Hoefler. He is also survived by his brother, Joe Hoefler and wife, Lisa, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mike cherished his role as a grandfather to Keller Baker, Bradleigh Baker, Tara Reuter, Dupri Hoefler and Dominic Hoefler.

ER girls suffer shutout losses

El Reno High School’s volleyball team continues to struggle with consistency over the best of five head-to-head matches following a pair of 3-0 shutout losses.

The Indians slipped to 3-6 on the season following a 25-18/28-26/25-15 home loss to Chickasha in the volleyball installment of the U.S. 81 Battle.

El Reno led the Chicks in two of the three games including an eight-point advantage in the game two loss. That setback came on the heels of a 25-14/25-21/25-10 road loss at Class 5A’s 14th-ranked Duncan.

A five-hit effort at the plate spelled the end of a six-game win streak for El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team as the Indians suffered a 4-0 non-district road loss to Duncan.

The loss came on the heels of a 9-4 revenge win over Noble, with the two-game split leaving El Reno with a 10-5 overall record.

The victory over the Bears lifted the Indians to 4-3 in the District 5A-2 standings and moved EHS to within a half game of Noble for third place.

Senior Malachi Nicholson leads all El Reno High School running backs with 474 yards and six touchdowns in only two games.

Local sisters win national title

Body

The team from Oklahoma Peak Performance, including three El Reno sisters, recently won the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship in the 13-year-old USA Bracket.

The event was held in Minneapolis, Minn.

There were 36 teams in the USA Bracket with OP2 being the lone squad from Oklahoma.

The squad posted an 8-3 record en route to the title and an 18-7 mark in the number of sets won versus lost.
