Leaders of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes said they commend Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and his Geographic Naming Advisory Board for recommending renaming Mount Evans in Clear Creek County, Colo., to Mount Blue Sky.

“We as Cheyenne and Arapaho people are excited and pleased with the name change recommendation from Colorado Gov. Jared Polis,” said C&A Gov. Reggie Wassana. “Thank you to all of you who came to the table, zoom meetings, and felt this was the best solution to promote healing of our Cheyenne and Arapaho people.”

Prayer service for Pearl Doris Slater will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 14 in the Benson Memorial Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Lance Warren and Deacon Lloyd Menz officiating. Burial will follow in the El Reno Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Doris died March 11, 2023, at her home in El Reno.

Jean Ann Bridges, 67 years of age, passed away peacefully in her home Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

Born July 26, 1955, to Thomas Jackson and Mildred Glee McGaughey in Boise City, Okla., she was the youngest of three children. The family settled in El Reno. Jeanie’s parents were educators, her father taught government at El Reno Junior College and her mother taught French at El Reno High School. Consequently, many of Jeanie’s friends attended their classes.

Rep. Tom Cole vows to look into a long-running issue for truckers

WASHINGTON - The chief concern for the nation’s truckers — a safe place to sleep — has caught the attention of an Oklahoma congressman who might be able to help.

During Rep. Tom Cole’s (R-Moore) first virtual town hall meeting of the current session of Congress, a trucker named Ken from Del City expressed his concern about the lack of safe, available parking for truckers to stop and sleep. He said it is a dire problem that needs federal attention. 

Wade Dean Piersall

Wade Dean Piersall was born March 31, 1955, on a U.S. military base in Frankfurt, Germany to Dean and Peggy Piersall. Wade passed away March 7, 2023, in El Reno.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peggy and Dean Piersall; grandparents, Clarence (Tiny) and Hazel Royse and Thornton and Della Piersall; and his parents-in-law, Robert and Mary Lund of El Reno.

Wade graduated from Yukon High School. He attended Oklahoma State and was a lifelong OSU fan and felt sorry for those supporting OU.

He was a bull rider for many years and loved the rodeo and horses.

Belva June Whittle

Body

Belva June (Rollins) Whittle passed away March 9, 2023, in El Reno. She was born to Charles and Florence Rollins on March 28, 1930, in Shawnee.

June was a member of the El Reno Study Club, Retired Teachers Association and First Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and spending time with her grandkids. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers and three sisters; and her daughter.

El Reno High School’s girls basketball team played in the Class 5A state semifinals last week at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman.

Despite two noon games, the team had good support in the stands and courtside.

Weekend split

Body

El Reno split games over the weekend with a 4-0 win over Clinton and an 11-3 loss to Chickasha. See Saturday’s edition for a wrap-up.

El Reno will be back in action Thursday hosting games in the annual Union City Spring Break Festival.
