Ban on youth transgender surgeries clears committee

Legislation making it illegal to perform sex-change surgeries on Oklahoma children or inject them with cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers has won easy approval in an Oklahoma Senate Committee.

Lawmakers also voted to bar state funds from paying for those procedures.

Both measures were advanced just days after Gov. Kevin Stitt called for their enactment in his State of the State address.

Mental health department disputes grounds for DOJ investigation

WASHINGTON – Oklahoma’s mental health department rejected claims of inadequate mental health services despite an ongoing federal investigation ignited last fall by an Oklahoma law firm that claims data proves the system is failing.

Brian Wilkerson, director of litigation at the Oklahoma Disability Law Center, said that over half ― 67 percent ― of 1,100 booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center six or more times in the past three years had sought services from the state mental health department.

Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Agnes Barthelme of Okarche will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Holy Trinity Church in Okarche with Rev. Cory Stanley and Deacon Max Schwarz officiating.

Burial will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

A prayer service for Mary Agnes was held Tuesday evening.

Barbara Jean Fuller Higdon, resident of El Reno, joined our Lord on Feb. 8, 2023. At age 84, she had fought valiant battles against kidney cancer and Alzheimer’s disease in the later parts of her life.

Graveside services for Robert Maxwell Morris will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20 at the Kingfisher Cemetery with Rev. James Inman officiating.

Services are under the direction of Turner Funeral Home, Geary.

Bob passed away Feb. 10, 2023, in Hydro.

He was born Nov. 16, 1939, in El Reno. He grew up in El Reno and lived most of his life in Oklahoma.

Bob was a plumber and enjoyed doing Boy Scouts with his son, John.

Funeral services for Jason Lee Ruff were held Monday at the Geary Emergency Response Center.

Burial was in the Greenfield Indian Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Jason died Feb. 8, 2023, at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

He was born Nov. 8, 1987, in Oklahoma City. He was a graduate of Capitol Hill High School and worked at OKC West.

Jason was a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes and Lakota Tribe. He participated in Sweat Lodge Ceremonies and Peyote Ceremonies.

El Reno sweeps Clash of the Titans

It’s been said practice makes perfect and El Reno High School’s girls basketball team has been shooting a bunch of free throws on non-game days.

“Coach Douglas (Jennifer) makes us shoot free throws every day,” said junior guard Nazhoni Sleeper.

Sleeper put that work to good use, hitting two clutch free throws with 22.1 seconds left to help secure El Reno’s 57-52 come-from-behind win over Carl Albert, ranked No.1 in the Class 5A West rankings.
