Once thought out of the playoff hunt after a 39-point loss to Elgin to open league play, El Reno has won two of the four games since to climb into a three-way tie for fourth place.

The top four teams in each district earn postseason passes, with El Reno sitting at 2-2 along with Noble and Duncan. The Indians own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Bears and will host the Demons Oct. 28.

ARDMORE – The third time really is the charm.

After losing two games earlier this year in the final minute, El Reno High School’s football team came up with a fourth-down stop with 32 seconds left to help preserve a 20-15 win over Ardmore.

With its first road victory of the season, El Reno moved to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the District 5A-1 standings.

“This was a very close game and we had to win this in order to have any shot at the playoffs. I think we all (defense) took it to heart after a tough third period and we had to bounce back from that.

City to plug into the fiber-optics Internet

Body

The city of El Reno is officially getting into the Internet business.

In a unanimous vote, the five-member city council agreed to finance the project through Great Plains Bank at a cost not to exceed $3.7 million. Mayor Matt White said the fiber plan is expected to cost less than that and expectations are the federal government will be offering grants to communities to help support the expansion of Internet services.

The city will draw funds as needed and for the first 18 months will pay interest only. There is no penalty for early payoff, White said.

Curtis to step away from school board

Body

Dallas Curtis informed other members of the El Reno School Board last week that he would not be seeking re-election and that he would be leaving his position sooner than expected.

Curtis has served on the board from Ward 2 for the past six years. His current term runs through April 2023.

El Reno Superintendent Matt Goucher said Curtis could be leaving as early as November.

“The way the rules are, his term ends the date he closes on his house. So the date he closes is the date he is off the board,” said Goucher.
