Pawnee grounder allows El Reno to walk off with 3-2 win in own tourney

A walk-off fielder’s choice single by Kaydence Pawnee in the bottom of the fifth inning allowed pinch runner Isabelle Choat to score as El Reno High School’s fast-pitch softball team defeated Shawnee 3-2.

The win came in the cross-bracket rounds of the 2022 El Reno High School Invitational as the Indians closed with a 2-1 record in the season-opening event.

El Reno defeated Del City 10-1 in the first round before falling 7-4 to Newcastle.

Despite all the days of triple-digit temperatures recently, Aubrey Twilley’s watermelon patch was able to produce this large melon which tipped the scales at 37 pounds.

El Reno High School’s football team went through a two and a half hour padded practice Friday, starting the countdown clock to this week’s preseason scrimmage with Elk City.

The Indians visit the Elks Friday, with junior high squads taking the field at 5 p.m., while high school teams will start at 6 p.m.

“We have not talked about the format yet with Elk City,” said El Reno head coach Russell Cook.

Union City third in Earlsboro; Calumet wins A-B title

Union City High School’s baseball team got a delayed start to the 2022 fall season over the weekend, taking third in the Earlsboro Invitational with a 2-1 record.

The Tigers dropped a close 6-5 game to Moss in pool play but bounced back for a 10-8 decision over Vanoss.

Union City then run-ruled the host club 11-1 in the third-place game.

Ludy Griggs’ club went 23-of-75 (.307) from the plate over three games with five doubles and two triples.

Brayden Armstrong (.750) led the team with six base hits including two doubles and a triple.

El Reno’s new ward map approved by narrow vote

El Reno will have a slightly different city council ward map after the new version was adopted in a 3-2 vote.

The new ward map was one of three choices offered to the council and was described by City Planner Dustin Downey as the one making the least change to the previous map.

Mayor Matt White and Ward 3 Council member Tim Robinson voted against the proposal chosen by Ward 4 Council member Tracey Rider, which was supported by Ward 1 Council member Steve Jensen and Ward 2 Council member Pete Stapperfend.

Order of the Purple Heart honors locals

Canadian County was well represented as the Oklahoma Military Order of the Purple Heart passed out a host of commendations for those who have gone above and beyond to assist veterans.

Among those honored during the ceremony, held at El Reno VFW Post 382, was Rep. Jay Steagall (R-Yukon), who was named the Military Man of the Year.

“There were those who went above and beyond, and some didn’t come home,” Steagall said in accepting the award.
