Canadian County will remain under a burn ban, as commissioners continue to monitor conditions that remain dry and dangerous – despite some intermittent showers in recent days.

“They (county fire chiefs) recommend allowing it to continue one more week – it hasn’t greened up, and we’re still in extreme drought conditions,” Emergency Manager Josh Davis said. He said while total recent rainfalls varied across the county, many areas saw about .25 of an inch of rain.

“That’s what we did in Mustang,” Commissioner David Anderson said.

The field is set for the November general election in Oklahoma as voters decided Tuesday who moves forward from six statewide runoff races, a congressional district race and several other ballot candidates and issues.

For the unexpired term of retiring U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, Republican voters chose to send Markwayne Mullin to the general election over T.W. Shannon.

Mullin will face Democrat Kendra Horn, Libertarian Robert Murphy and Independent Ray Woods.

Darcie (Darci) Elizabeth Self, age 68, of El Reno, entered into eternal pain-free rest on Aug. 15, 2022, in Oklahoma City, peacefully and with family at her side.

Darci fought for years, battling a painful, rare nerve damage disorder, and more recently several forms of cancer. But even the strongest woman to walk the face of the earth could not beat back the cancer.

Lamplighters OHCE of Canadian County met recently at a local church.

Carol Stine offered the devotional titled “A Love Letter” and also read the poem “A Perfect Day.” It was from a different era about the many jobs women performed every day.

Maxine Little read minutes from the previous meeting. Members went through a checklist of finished items for the fair and items that members need to bring to the fair. Patricia Morrison has pre-entered all the items.

After sweeping through pool play undefeated at its own 2022 El Reno High School Invitational, the Indians varsity volleyball team ran into an old foe in the semifinals of Gold Bracket play, losing 2-1 to Tecumseh.

The 25-21/18-22/15-11 loss dropped Class 5A’s 16th-ranked El Reno to 4-2 on the season. It was the second setback in less than a week to the Savages.

The Indians went 3-0 in Pool A play with 2-0 victories over Seminole (25-21/25-20), Santa Fe South (25-18/25-17) and Chickasha (25-19/25-22).

Despite a pair of three-hit outings from two of its seniors, El Reno High School’s fast-pitch team suffered a second straight road loss last week with a 6-2 setback at Guthrie.

El Reno is now 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in District 5A-2 and fifth place in the league standings.

Seniors Kira Taber and C.C. Medders had three hits each and combined to score both El Reno runs. In the third inning, Medders doubled and scored on a single by Taber.

In the fifth, Medders hit a single ahead of an RBI-double from Taber.

El Reno High School’s cross country team kicked off the 2022 season recently with four girls and a full boys team running in the Weatherford Invitational held at Radar Park.

The boys team placed 14th overall with 376 points, which is calculated off the finish of each runner in the field, with lowest team score taking first. There were 154 runners in the boys field.

Logan Singletary led El Reno’s effort on the 3,200-meter course with a time of 13 minutes and 22.9 seconds and crossed in 86th place.

UNION CITY – Taking advantage of five walks, an error and a hit in the top of the first inning, Calumet High School’s fast-pitch softball team built a four-run lead and never trailed en route to a 10-5 win over cross-county rival Union City.

Calumet’s victory snapped a three-game losing streak in the county series, which started in 2019 when Union City added fast-pitch softball. The Tigers still hold an overall lead of 5-4.
