Indians raid Pirates pitching for run-rule win

Only a prearranged five-run scoring limit per inning kept El Reno High School’s varsity 1 baseball team from posting an even larger winning margin in last week’s home series with Putnam City.

El Reno scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning with one out and went on to cruise to a 9-1 victory over the Pirates.

The game was called in the bottom of the fifth by run-rule.

The victory extended El Reno’s win streak to three games as the Indians improved to 3-1 on the season and in the Wooden Bat Division of the Red Dirt League.

New Calumet skipper pleased with team’s effort; UC splits bids

CALUMET – Seeing his new players in action for the first time since taking over Calumet High School’s baseball program, Cody Thiessen guided the Chieftains to a 2-1 record in a scaled-down summer schedule.

The Chieftains, who will attend a camp this week at Frontier, defeated Hinton (15-0) and Arapaho-Butler (9-1) in the Calumet Festival.

Those wins were followed by a 7-0 loss to Class 5A’s Elgin.

Channel catfish excellent on punch bait, worms around dam, riprap and shallows. Largemouth bass fair on bill baits, buzz baits, lipless baits, plastic baits around riprap, rocks and standing timber. Crappie fair on jigs, minnows.

Oklahoma House hopefuls address El Reno Now crowd

Four candidates for two Oklahoma House of Representative seats all agreed addressing mental health issues should be a top priority for the state.

Unfortunately, they all agreed there is no clear-cut answer on how to do this.

The four attended last week’s gathering of El Reno Now, hosted for the last time by Mayor Matt White and outgoing School Superintendent Craig McVay.

County commissioner candidates quizzed during ER Chamber forum

Body

Three newcomers to county politics and one incumbent spent close to an hour answering questions from residents during a 2022 Legislative Forum. The event was held at Redlands Community College.

The event, sponsored by the El Reno Chamber of Commerce, featured the four candidates seeking one of two Canadian County commissioner positions up for vote on June 28.

Marc Hader, current District 1 commissioner, is seeking re-election against fellow Republican Tom Manske.

Treasurer Leck to retire from county service June 30, cites health reasons for departure

Carolyn Leck will officially retire and step down as Canadian County treasurer June 30.

Leck will leave office early, citing health issues. She will be replaced by Jay Arnold, who will be sworn into office July 1.

It will mean the end of an era for the longtime county treasurer, who has served in that capacity for almost 12 years – leading an office she has worked in for 28 years.

State legislators respond to Glossip investigation findings

OKLAHOMA CITY – Reps. Kevin McDugle, R-Broken Arrow, and Justin Humphrey, R-Lane, held a press conference responding to findings from a third party investigation regarding the case of death row inmate Richard Glossip.

The investigation, conducted on a pro-bono basis in part due to the urging of multiple legislators to look into the case, was undertaken by a 30-lawyer team from the Reed Smith Law Firm, assisted by Crowe & Dunlevy of Oklahoma.

Indians extend win streak with Chargers shutout

With a pair of runners in scoring position, freshman Mason Fulton struck out the final batter on four pitches to earn his first save of the summer season as El Reno High School’s varsity 1 baseball team defeated Heritage Hall.

The 4-0 win over the Chargers was the second victory in a row for the Indians, who improved to 2-1 in the Red Dirt League’s Wooden Bat Division standings.

El Reno is also 2-1 on the season.
