Letter to the Editor: Be proud El Reno

Body

To the Editor:

On Oct. 7, 1948, a beautiful fall day, my mom, grandmother, our dog, Bootsie, and myself came up over the top of the north overpass from Herington, Kan., in a 1939 Plymouth loaded down and ready for a new life.

I thought El Reno was the most beautiful little town I had ever seen.

The homes were colorful and everything so neat, many of the homes are still there today.

One of the great myths of politics is that the policy stances of medical associations reflect the views of most doctors. But that claim is being dispelled more and more as medical associations continue to take political stances far afield from the mainstream of society.

For example, the American Medical Association (AMA) has debated removing sex from birth certificates, saying there is “no clear standard for defining sex designation” and that designating sex on birth certificates “as male or female suggests that sex is simple and binary.”

Sitting at 0-5 on the season and coming off back to back District 5A-1 setbacks, El Reno High School’s football team is in desperate need of a mark in the win column.

And it doesn’t matter who its against said head coach Chuck Atchison.

“We want a win period. That’s it, it doesn’t matter who we are playing.”

El Reno will get a good shot at that elusive first win of 2021 Thursday when the Indians travel to Oklahoma City’s Speegle Stadium to take on Capitol Hill. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

“Winning a game will solve a lot of our problems,” said Atchison.

El Reno High School’s volleyball team took over sole possession of third place in the Suburban Conference standings last week with a 3-0 road win over Del City.

The 25-6/25-16/25-16 victory over the Eagles lifted El Reno to 2-2 in the league standings. El Reno, ranked 11th in Class 5A, improved to 20-11 on the season heading into Tuesday’s match against No.7 Piedmont.

El Reno served at 96 percent for the match with 15 aces. Bailey Denwalt led the way with seven aces, followed by Madison Patswald with six and Qyra Jones with two.

Take away two defensive breakdowns and Etta Dale’s seventh-grade football team would have had a total domination of the Guthrie Bluejays on both sides of the football last week.

Instead, the Indians walked away from Memorial Stadium with a 30-12 win and a 4-1 overall record after a recent road loss to Piedmont.

Guthrie scored a touchdown on a 65-yard run on its first offensive play, then added a 13-yard scoring pass on fourth down in the third period. The Bluejays ran less than 25 plays on the night thanks to El Reno’s ball-control ground game.

Turnovers lead to disastrous start in 49-8 El Reno loss to MacArthur

Body

What started out as a promising sight quickly turned to a disastrous first period as El Reno High School's football team dug itself a hole in which the Indians could not climb out from Friday night in a 49-8 loss to Lawton MacArthur.

The setback dropped the Indians to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in the District 5A-1 standings. The Highlanders, meanwhile, kept pace with Noble and Ardmore for the district lead at 2-0 while improving to 5-0 on the year.

The first El Reno Community Day and Fly-In was hailed as a “great event.” That 2020 celebration of El Reno and aviation attracted an estimated 2,000 people to the El Reno Regional Airport.

Last Saturday, the second such event probably more than doubled that turnout and sent expectations for next year into orbit.

“I think it was just a fantastic day for everyone involved,” said Airport Manager Adam Fox.

Jason Gipson was 23 years old when he spent a year as a U.S. Army Infantryman in Iraq. That was in 2004.

Today, Gipson is 40. He has a wife and daughter. He also has nightmares. That’s why he’s very thankful to have Dale.

Dale is his dog, a soon-to-be 4-year-old mix of lab and pit that helps him make it through the night.

Gipson suffers from PTSD - post traumatic stress disorder. Like many veterans, he saw things in Iraq. He may have had to do things that people probably weren’t created to do.

Maple student airlifted to hospital after bus accident

Body

A 13-year-old Maple School student was airlifted to OU Medical Center Monday after the school bus he was riding in ran off the road and into a ditch.

The boy’s name was not released by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, but reports said he was admitted into the hospital in “good condition” after suffering a leg injury. The child was reportedly pinned inside the bus and had to be extracted by emergency personnel.
