Felon sentenced after pleading guilty to assaulting deputy, inmate

A felon has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison and 90 days in the county jail after pleading guilty to assaulting a Canadian County sheriff’s deputy and a fellow inmate.

Oklahoma City’s Samuel Ray Parsons, 24, was convicted on several felony charges at an Aug. 20 hearing before Special Judge Charles Gass in Canadian County District Court.

Parsons entered a guilty plea to “all counts in all cases” according to court minutes.

OHP, law enforcement to keep close eye on Labor Day motorists

The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office and the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety want to remind drivers to always drive sober and drive safe.

In 2020, six people were killed during the Labor Day holiday period.

There were a total of 502 crashes, with 53 of those being alcohol and/or drug related. Six people were also killed during the 2019 holiday weekend.

“There is no excuse for driving impaired or distracted, these crashes are completely avoidable,” said Cody McDonell, communications manager for the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office.

ER Class of ’56 to gather for burgers

El Reno High School Class of 1956 will meet at 10:20 a.m. Sept. 10 in the pavilion across from Etta Dale Junior High for visiting and fried onion hamburgers. All are welcome to join.

Class members will also have a float in the EHS homecoming parade.

Operation Christmas Child volunteers to host Project Leader Workshop

Operation Christmas Child volunteers will host a Project Leader Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Stable Rock Baptist Church, 1301 Cemetery Road, Yukon.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

The Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child collects shoebox gifts filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items, and delivers them to children in need around the world.

COVID-19 issues shuffle ER schedules

While both El Reno High School softball and volleyball programs lost games last week due to COVID-19 complications with opposing teams, Athletic Director Rodney Haydon does not see the virus as a growing problem for sports just yet.

“It really has not been an issue until this week. We had an athletic directors meeting last week and we didn’t even discuss cancellations. I think it’s not so much a COVID-19 issue but more of a numbers game and being cautious,” said Haydon.

Gerald Dean Presley left this mortal plane on Aug. 26, 2021, at the age of 77. He was born Oct. 10, 1943, in Seminole to Henry and Sarah Armstrong Presley.

Memorial services are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in El Reno, with Rev. Michael Moss officiating.

Gerald graduated from Bowlegs High School in 1961 with many academic and athletic honors.
