Sorting out free school supplies

For a third straight year, a grant from the Ashbrook Foundation along with funds from other community partners will allow the district to provide free school supplies to its more than 3,000 students.

El Reno Public Schools Outreach Director Brooke Robertson said the total cost for the supplies was more than $48,000.

Classes for El Reno Public Schools are set to begin Thursday morning for the 2021-22 term.

Oklahoma Aeronautics Academy to host open house Saturday

The Oklahoma Aeronautics Academy will host an open house on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the El Reno Regional Airport.

Veteran aviator Ken Larcher is the owner and instructor at the flight school.

The day will feature burgers and drinks, as well as chances to win free simulator flights and actual flight lessons.

A paper airplane contest will be part of the festivities and the El Reno Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting for the new business.

Trust sets aside $165,000 to buy lagoon land

A Canadian County trust has set aside $165,000 to acquire six more acres of property for a sewage lagoon adjacent to the new Canadian County Expo and Event Center.

The Canadian County Public Facility Authority (CCPFA), comprised of the three county commissioners, are due to close soon on this real estate purchase near the northwest corner of Alfadale and Jensen roads, just east of the El Reno city limits.

The $165,000 amount covers the price of the land plus closing costs, said District 2 Commissioner David Anderson.

To the Editor:

I am so frustrated over what is coming out of our country’s capital and lawmakers that I am compelled to speak out.

I would love to have the luxury of time to march or organize a sit-in, but I work. I am watching the pendulum swing the completely opposite direction in the United States with seemingly no ability to achieve middle ground or retain my rights under the Constitution.

El Reno High School assistant coach and equipment manager Fred Slaughter places a new helmet with the Indians 2021 season logo in a player’s locker Sunday in preparation for the start of preseason drills Monday.

Due to school starting later this week, head coach Chuck Atchison said the Indians would not have two-a-day drills but one longer session starting daily at 3:45 p.m.

El Reno High School’s softball team closed out the preseason last week with home scrimmages against Weatherford and Shawnee.

The Indians were set to open the 2021 season Tuesday at home against Bishop McGuinness.

Harold Edward Kessler

Body

Harold Edward Kessler was born March 31, 1931, to Admiral Dewey and Jessie Kessler in El Reno. He passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 6, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Harold attended El Reno High School, graduating in 1949. He was quite the athlete, lettering in football, baseball and basketball, helping the Indians win a state basketball championship in 1949, his senior year.

After high school, Harold joined the Navy, serving four years in San Diego, Calif., and throughout several areas of the Mediterranean.

Bertha Miller

Funeral services for Bertha “Bertie” Irene Miller will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Benson Memorial Chapel.

Burial will follow in the El Reno Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Bertie died Aug. 6, 2021, at Corn Heritage Village in Weatherford. She was born Oct. 13, 1927, in La Feria, Texas. A former resident of El Reno, she was a homemaker and member of the Methodist Church.
