Helping to keep the aviation world in the air

Body

Oklahoma is relatively unmatched in air superiority – on the ground at least.

Midwest City is home to the U.S. Department of Defense’s largest air depot at Tinker Air Force Base.

Tulsa International Airport houses the largest commercial airline maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility on the planet.

Geography contributes as both cities are roughly equidistant (1,400 miles, one way) to both Los Angeles and New York.

June sees summer swoon in weather patterns

Body

A slow start to summer gave way to sweltering heat through the middle of June before once again succumbing to mild, wet weather to end the month.

There were occasional bouts with severe weather ― mostly high winds and large hail ― although flooding was a common concern as well. Winds of up to 75 mph hit Snyder overnight on June 7, producing widespread damage to the town.

The celebration is a welcome contrast to a year ago when the national celebration was subdued by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Friday evening concert is free and will feature Coyette and the Haywire Band at 6 p.m. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Concessions will be available.

Jagrut “JC” Shah told members of the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office gathered around a truck bearing the images of lawmen who lost their lives while on duty in 2020, they were all heroes.

Lt. Shirley Lanning of Canadian County was among those being remembered. Lanning died in a traffic accident on her way into work. Reports indicated she may have suffered a medical emergency similar to a stroke.

Council seeks out property purchase

Body

After a week delay, the El Reno City Council approved entering into negotiations to possibly purchase 10 acres on SW 27th Street.

The unanimous council vote came Tuesday during a special meeting of the council. The issue was originally discussed the week before but because the physical address of the property was not included on the agenda, council opted to put the matter off until a second special meeting could be called, this one with the address included.

Ammunition shortages have affected the U.S.

“It’s created such a stir,” Yukon Police Chief John Corn said.

The police department has not had an instance of running out of ammo, but they have gotten close, the chief said.

As consumers visit local shooting sports stores to find ammo, police departments have been struggling with buying bullets for on-duty work and training purposes.

Virgin requests study on ending state grocery tax

Body

OKLAHOMA CITY – House Minority Leader Emily Virgin, D-Norman, filed an interim study request to examine the benefits of ending the state sales tax on groceries.

Eliminating the tax was a key component of House Democrats Oklahoma Focused Budget this past session. The elimination would save Oklahomans, many of whom are struggling to keep up with the cost of living, more than $250 million in taxes on groceries.
