HARRAH – Returning three years later to the court where he logged his 200th career win during his first stint as head coach, El Reno High School’s Rodney Haydon opened up his second run as the Indians skipper in a big way.
El Reno, ranked ninth in Class 5A, had 12 players score in a lopsided 74-33 win over previously unbeaten Harrah to start the 2020-21 season.
The first tournament weekend of the season for Canadian County’s small school basketball programs netted three trophies including a title for the undefeated Calumet High School boys.
The Chieftains improved to 8-0 on the season with a 61-60 win over Class B’s third-ranked Lomega in the title game of the Canton tournament after the Raiders missed a game-tying free throw late. Calumet, ranked No.4 in Class A, picked up a first-round forfeit by Taloga before defeating Fairview 66-45 to reach the finals.
Canadian County Treasurer Carolyn Leck said because of COVID-19, her office is utilizing a lock-box payment system with the bank for mailed-in payments.
Leck said the program is “extremely efficient but does take a few more days for a check to clear the bank of origin.”

Sustained growth in Canadian County has spurred Canadian Valley Technology Center administration to develop new educational opportunities for prospective high school students and adults.
Industrial Automation and Robotics Technology, or iART, is one of two new programs being added in fall 2021. Emergency Services is the other. Online enrollment is under way at cvtech.edu for the additions to the school’s El Reno campus.
When Jessica Reed of El Reno graduated from high school in 2018, she knew she wanted to work with children. When she started working at the Canadian Valley Child Development Center, she heard about the Scholars for Excellence in Child Care Program offered at Redlands Community College.
“It was a way to further my education while doing something I love,” said Reed, who has already earned her Certificate of Mastery in child care through the program.

Gary Lee Worthington (Kiowa name “Red Cloud”), 51, was born Jan. 27, 1969, in Okmulgee to M. Wayne Worthington and Francine (Doyebi) Worthington. Gary passed away Dec. 10, 2020, at Norman Regional Hospital.
Gary graduated from El Reno High School with the class of 1988. He attended the Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque, N.M., in 1991, and Haskell Indian Nations University from 1991 through 1993.
Services for Sharon Sue Palmer will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial to follow at the El Reno Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.
Sharon died Dec. 11, 2020, in Oklahoma City.
Celebration of life services for Andy Logan Snow were held Monday at First Baptist Church of Hinton with Rev. Keith Gillham officiating. Services were under the direction of Turner Funeral Home.
Andy passed away Dec. 11, 2020, at his home in Yukon. He was born Oct. 25, 1964, in Weatherford.
Andy grew up in Hinton and was a 1982 graduate of Hinton High School. He had many jobs over the years including working in oil and gas, farming, truck driving, Harley Davidson sales, and as a barber. Andy was a member of Hinton First Baptist Church.
