The man charged with leaving his young son to die in a pickup on an August day in 2018 will be sentenced for his crime after waiving his right to a jury trial.

Adam Kolar is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his 3-year-old son, Ryker.

Assistant District Attorney Eric Epplin said Kolar waived his right to a jury trial. He will enter a plea and be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 24 in Canadian County District Court.

El Reno photographer Ed Zweiacher snapped this photo of the last sunset of summer. Zweiacher said he plans to have some photo calendars available in 2021, including scenes from the historic Darlington Chapel as well as El Reno.

Tucked away in south Tulsa, on a street where residential homes have mostly been converted to commercial businesses, sits Sangha (pronounced SAHN-guh, Sanskrit for community). Sangha is a sober-living house that typically houses around six men working to kick addiction.

There is nothing quite like the taste of a tomato picked fresh off the vine. But with the season quickly coming to a close, some gardeners may feel a little sad knowing that vine-fresh taste is fleeting.

Fortunately, gardeners do have the ability to extend the flavor of summer just a little longer, said David Hillock, Oklahoma State University Extension consumer horticulturist.

New Hope Women’s Missionary Union met recently at New Hope Church to begin its 2020-21 sessions. Carol Johnson offered opening prayer, while Mary Ellen Jones led the group in the WMU Watchword and Mission Statement.

Members recognized missionary donations and services provided by the group.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the yearly dessert auction has been postponed for a later date.

It was noted that a memorial plaque honoring former members and charter members of New Hope will be presented to the church.

El Reno High School’s softball team snapped its four-game losing streak last week by stringing together three straight road wins in District 5A-1 play.

“We decided to come out and play this week. We want to be playing our best softball at the end of the season and I’m proud of the girls for sticking with the process and playing hard.

“Now they are seeing that hard work come to fruition,” said El Reno head coach Kylee Webb.

El Reno improved to 11-16 on the season with a 13-4 win over Lawton MacArthur to split the season series with the Highlanders.

El Reno High School’s cross country team had one of its better showings of the fall recently, taking part in the 2020 Turkey Creek Classic hosted by Hennessey.

Held at Turkey Creek Golf Course, the girls team was represented by Kaylee Pawnee, who ran the 3,200-meter course in a time of 19 minutes and 51 seconds to take 81st overall.

The El Reno boys team took part in the 5-kilometer, 3.1 mile course, led by a 32nd-place effort by Jacob Long with a time of 20:01.

El Reno, ranked No.5 in Class 5A, was scheduled to play at Noble Thursday after having its match with Harding Charter Prep canceled.
