El Reno students continue Gifts for the Yanks tradition

Body

If you’ve been around El Reno long, you’ve almost certainly heard about El Reno High School's annual Gifts for the Yanks program. You probably already know the following:

► We have been doing this program continuously since 1945.

► Through the program, we raise money to purchase gifts which EHS students wrap and personally give to the veterans at the Oklahoma City VA Hospital.

► Even though many schools were involved in the program at the end of World War II (in 1945), El Reno High School is the ONLY school in the nation that has done it that entire time.

Make your own luck

Body

What exactly is luck? Why do some people appear to be luckier than others?

Is luck a question of chance, fate, or are there things you can do to improve your luck?

Actually, being lucky isn’t just a matter of luck at all.

Luck is a combination of attitude, mental orientation, preparation and opportunity. Typically, lucky people have an approach of possibility, whereas unlucky people have a mindset of impossibility.

Director Martin Scorsese’s new movie, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” tells the true story of a string of murders on the Osage Nation’s land in Oklahoma in the 1920s. Based on David Grann’s meticulously researched 2017 book, the movie delves into racial and family dynamics that rocked Oklahoma to the core when oil was discovered on Osage lands.

Letter to the Editor: Kindness and encouragement

Body

To the Editor:

People come into our lives when we need them the most. They come to lift our spirits or to give us hope. It’s not by accident that they come into our lives, they are sent by God, so I guess you could call them a messenger from God or “God’s Mailman.” They come to bring you a message just when you need it.

Sometimes these people don’t even know how much their kind words or acts of kindness really mean to us. How can they, unless we tell them.

Letter to the Editor: Former county assessor supports restoring jail

Body

To the Editor:

History, historical buildings and architecture are awesome reminders of things past and were intended to be passed from one generation to the next. It comes in many forms.

Sometimes it’s those who came before us and their writings or maybe their actions taken. Sometimes it’s the buildings and architecture that are of a historical nature, which can't be replaced or duplicated once it is destroyed.

Letter to the Editor: Save the jail

Body

To the Editor:

History is the study of change over time and covers all aspects of human society.

In regards to the preservation of the Canadian County Jail and its historical meaning, I sincerely hope that common ground can be found to restore it as a museum. This would benefit our community and our citizens for generations to come,

Previous administrations made the decision to tear down our most treasured landmark, the original Canadian County Courthouse, built in 1902.

Russell Brand: Shoulds, Mays, Shouldn’ts and Must Nots

Body

A disclaimer, just to clarify things up front: I have no opinion on the truth or falsehood of allegations -- made anonymously by multiple women and reported by multiple UK media outlets -- that comedian/podcaster Russell Brand is a serial rapist.

I happen to have disliked Brand during his earlier comedy career (just a matter of personal taste), and to enjoy his current podcast, “Stay Free With Russell Brand.”

The value of having a hometown newspaper

Body

There’s an old saying that you don’t really appreciate something until you don’t have it anymore.

We all know that to be true in our personal life with each loss of a lifelong friend or family member.

It’s no secret many newspapers in the United States have closed in recent years. Every time it happens, it feels like losing a lifelong friend or family member.
