El Reno High School’s softball team had games with Carl Albert and Guthrie canceled by rain last week. The game with the Titans will be made up Sept. 24 in Midwest City.

The Indians still remain a solid hitting team with a combined .366 team batting average. El Reno has logged 136 hits including two triples, 10 home runs and 20 doubles.

Union City wins tourney; Calumet misses upset bid

Brayden Dennings threw a one-hit shutout as Union City High School’s baseball team won the 2020 Mulhall-Orlando Invitational with a three-game sweep.

The shutout came in a 10-0 decision over Glencoe in the finals, on the heels of victories over Cimarron (15-3) and Shidler (6-1). The Tigers are 8-2 on the season.

Dennings threw four complete innings, allowing the hit and two walks against four strikeouts.

Calumet logs hits; UCHS win streak out

Fueled by 26 hits over a two-game span, Calumet High School’s softball team moved to 8-5 on the season with wins over Dover and Fargo.

Calumet defeated the Longhorns 11-4 before logging a 4-3 win over Fargo, which sports players from Gage and Fort Supply.

The Chieftains posted 20 hits in the win over Dover and hit for the cycle. McKinley Stilley had two doubles, followed by one each from Tina Ortiz, Abby Nitzel and Presley Stilley.

Allie Harris had a triple and Nitzel added a home run.

Joy Ellen Canon was born Sept. 3, 1931, near Calumet, the daughter of Edward Loy and Edith (Andersen) Spear.

An elementary schoolteacher, her career took her to Hutchinson, Kan., and later, while working for the Department of Defense Dependent School System, to Okinawa, Japan, and Ulm, Germany. After her retirement, she returned to Calumet. She enjoyed a simple life living on the farm, caring for her pets and joining friends for coffee at the 270 Cafe.

Joy died Aug. 25, 2020, at Willowood Assisted Living in Mustang.
