Chieftains, Union City earn hardcourt wins, Okarche edged

Calumet High School’s girls basketball team moved to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2022 with a 64-54 road victory over Lookeba-Sickles.

The Chieftains were led in scoring by Hayden Mayfield with 20 points, followed by Randi Upchego with 17 points and Lila Winegeart with 13.

Union City 47, Binger-Oney 33

Union City’s defense held the Bobcats to single-digit scoring in three of four periods, while its offense flipped the script to jump back into the win column by a 47-33 margin.

Redlands competes at NJCAA Nationals

Redlands Community College runners battled through freezing temperatures and snow recently to earn placings at the 2025 NJCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships in Iowa.

The Redlands men placed 35th as a team with 900 total points on the 8,000-meter course, led by Andres Mandujano.

The freshman posted a time of 27 minutes and 29.5 seconds to place 18th overall out of more than 300 runners.

Mandujano was just four seconds out of the top 15 and 17 seconds back of 10th place.

City honors Duran with proclamation

The family of the late Sgt. Thomas Duran was honored with a proclamation from the City of El Reno that read: In Loving Memory and Deep Appreciation for Sergeant Thomas Duran.

Mayor Steve Jensen read the proclamation at the opening of Tuesday night’s city council meeting. Standing beside him was Kirsten Duran, wife of the El Reno officer who lost his life recently after being injured in a hit-and-run incident. 

A number of El Reno police officers, family and friends of Sgt. Duran were in the council chambers as the proclamation was presented.

Just so you know, I started writing this column for the Saturday, Nov. 8 paper. It kept getting pushed back due to space. Just keep that in mind as to why I’m talking about Halloween! 

Halloween is over, so now, on to Thanksgiving!
