Tough field drops EHS girls out of top 10 at tournament

A stout field at the 2024 Guthrie Lady Bluejays Invitational pushed El Reno High School’s girls tennis team out of the top 10 in all four divisions.

The highest finish for El Reno was Delanda Robb at No.1 singles, taking 13th with a bye and default win over Putnam City's Raim Sui. She opened with a straight sets loss to Guthrie’s Emma Poupard, followed by a loss to Durant’s Hadley Perrin (6-0/6-1).

El Reno thinclads turn in strong showing at Runyan Relays

El Reno High School’s track teams headed north on the longest road trip of the season, a 260-mile round-trip jaunt to Ponca City for the 2024 Jerry Runyan Relays.

The boys team earned four points from a fifth-place finish by its sprint relay team of Phoenix Whiteshirt, Elijah Fisher, Malachi Nicholson and Kaleb Blackwolf with a time of 45.69 seconds. The junior varsity team was eighth at 47.53 seconds.

The same varsity lineup ran the 4x200-meter event in one minute, 37.69 seconds to place sixth. The JV team was sixth at 1:41.53.

Cougars jump on four-game winning path

The top-ranked team in Class B is picking up steam for another postseason run as Calumet High School’s baseball team defeated the host of the Cashion Invitational 2-0 in the championship game.

The victory over the Wildcats, ranked No.2 in Class 2A, extended the Chieftains win streak to five games. Calumet reached the title game with wins over Lomega (7-1) and Christian Heritage (11-1).

The Chieftains entered the event with a 10-3 win over Binger-Oney. The team’s current win streak lifted Calumet to 11-3 on the spring heading into the Roff Festival.

Wins elude Okarche, area softball teams

It’s been a rough start to the month of April for Okarche High School’s slow-pitch softball team, ranked 15th in Class 2A, as the Warriors have posted a 2-3 record.

Okarche defeated Minco (8-4) and Class 4A’s 14th-ranked Covington-Douglas (13-1), but fell to Mountain View/Gotebo (17-2) and two ranked schools. Binger-Oney, the top-ranked team in Class A, defeated OHS 15-4, while Class 3A’s second-ranked Ripley posted a 10-3 win over the Warriors.

The three straight losses left Okarche with an 11-12 overall record.

Redlands golfers struggle in ORU Spring Invitational

Redlands Community College women’s golf team struggled to a 14th-place finish at the Oral Roberts University Spring Invitational, shooting its lowest round of 338 on the final day.

The Cougars had a 54-hole total of 1,026 (341/347/338) to beat out Incarnate Word University by 250 strokes.

The event was played on the River Course at The Club at Indian Springs in Broken Arrow.

Daniela Espinoza had the low total for Redlands at 242 (81/83/78) to tie for 66th in the individual medalist race.

Clara Peake (82/83/82) carded a 247 tally to tie for 71st.

Cougars jump on four-game winning path

After dropping the series opener to Northern Oklahoma College of Tonkawa 4-3, Redlands Community College’s baseball team won two straight over the Mavericks to take the series.

The Cougars 11-6 and 13-8 victories lifted Redlands to 3-14 in the NJCAA Region 2, Division 2 standings for 11th place.

The series win also sparked a four-game win streak as Redlands swept a twinbill from Oklahoma Christian University by scores of 6-3 and 5-2 to improve to 11-31 for the season.

Over the five games, Redlands went 43-of-147 (.293) from the plate with 13 extra base hits.

El Reno shoots season-low home round

Body

Spurred by three sub-50 scores on the front nine, the Indians golf team took ninth place out of 16 teams at the 2024 El Reno High School Girls Invitational.

Played at Crimson Creek Golf Course, El Reno carded its first sub-400 team score of the season, shooting a 395 to edge out Yukon by nine strokes. Edmond Memorial won the event with a 344, followed by Marlow (348) and Heritage Hall (369).

The top nine teams all broke 400.

Indians post mixed results in local, Weatherford bids

It was a mixed bag of results over a 24-hour period for El Reno High School’s boys golf team last week, driven mostly by a shift in playing conditions.

In near perfect playing conditions, the Indians carded a 337 team score to place third in the 2023 Weatherford Boys Invitational.

El Reno was 24 strokes off the winning pace set by Woodward, but only 16 back of Elk City for second.

El Reno beat out Clinton (340), Thomas/Fay-Custer (341) and Weatherford (349) to round out the top six.

Indians split Kingfisher tourney bids

Following a big rally for a run-ruled pool victory over Weatherford, El Reno High School’s baseball team dropped a close 6-5 game to Class A’s 14th-ranked Laverne in cross-bracket play in the 2024 Kingfisher Invitational.

El Reno served as one of the two host sites for the event, posting a 2-2 record to exit the event with a 13-5 overall record. The Indians rallied from a six-run deficit with a 21-run blitz over three innings to defeat Weatherford 21-9 and logged an 11-1 win over Clinton.

The other loss was a close 4-3 game against Putnam City West.
