El Reno Mayor Matt White filed for re-election on Monday and drew at least one opponent in former longtime school board member Steve Jensen. The filing period closes at 4:30 today, Wednesday, Aug. 28. Filings are done at the Canadian County Election Board.

Election Board Secretary Wanda Armold said as of Monday afternoon no one had filed for the Ward 4 City Council seat that will be on the Nov. 12 ballot along with the mayoral race. Ward 4 is currently represented by Tracey Rider, who said recently she was contemplating whether or not to run.

Ward 4 is a four-year term, while the successful mayoral candidate will serve a three-year term.

White is seeking his fifth term as mayor.

White, 47, said he is running for re-election “because I love working with and for the people of El Reno.

“I think I’ve proven I’m accessible whether it’s attending events and meetings or being open to people through social media or by phone,” said White.

“At times that’s not always comfortable, but that goes with the job.”

White pointed to how he dealt with the May 25 tornado that killed two people, injured dozens and damaged businesses as an example of his willingness to serve

“There wasn’t much sleep during the 36 hours after that tragedy, but that’s just what happens when you make a promise to lead and to serve.”

White said during his tenure El Reno has seen positive growth.

“I think as a community we’ve made great progress, but I truly believe even more progress is in store for El Reno. I’d like to continue to work like crazy to help make that happen.”

Jensen served 20 years as a member of the El Reno Public School Board, several terms as president of the board.

He chose not to seek re-election in February.

Jensen, 52, said he has been asked to seek the mayor’s seat and has spent time in prayer discerning the decision to run.

“I believe the Lord has called me to run for mayor,” Jensen said. “I am excited about El Reno’s future and want to be an integral part in helping cast a vision for our city.

“I desire to empower people to use their expertise and work together to achieve greatness for our community. I love El Reno and would be blessed to serve as mayor.”
