Mobile Meals is back. Technically, it never went away completely.

Though the nonprofit organization stopped delivering hot meals to homes, volunteers continued to deliver groceries and supplies since COVID-19 forced the changes in March.

This was done in conjunction with The Lord’s Harvest.

Starting Monday, Mobile Meals volunteers will head back into the kitchen. Amy Neathery, Mobile Meals board president, said the group is taking a phased approach.

Likely starting on Wednesday, volunteers will begin delivering food to customers once per week. The kitchen staff will be limited to three people at a time.

The meals will be taken from the kitchen to the volunteer drivers, who will then deliver the food to recipients where it will be placed in coolers left outside their homes.

Volunteers will be following CDC guidelines regarding social distancing, and face masks and thermometers will be in use.

Backup volunteers are available in case any drivers are unable to make the rounds.

Neathery said the number of people getting food is close to what it was before — around 160 people.

“We recognize that these people need hot fresh meals,” she said. “We’re trying to bring Mobile Meals back in the safest way we can.”

After two weeks of once-a-week deliveries, Mobile Meals will assess the situation and decide on the next phase. During the first phase, the group needs time to work with vendors on the amount of food that can be procured.
